Anyone an Eerie, Indiana fan? It's more of a children's show, but it seems to be groundbreaking for it's time, introducing storytelling & worldbuilding to younger kids. I see a pitch of that show in this, but only with the subtleties of the strange within a seemingly normal town. stevp19Bitchin: Yes, I watched it when it first aired, either during or just before the golden age of the Fox Kids afterschool shows(Goosebumps, New Addams Family, Beetleborgs, etc). In the only episode I can remember, the strangeness was used to satirize pop culture and suburban life. So it was like a spooky kids version of Suburgatory. The satire sets it apart from Stranger Things, but the more I think about it, the more they do seem alike.
It was short-lived and somewhat obscure, so I'm surprised to see the show mentioned on this subreddit. I wonder if the other ten people who watched that show are also on here...
er1127:Dustin: The best things are short...
This Freaks & Geeks Buddy Holly Biggie Smalls XXXTentacion The Body (Stephen King Novella) Etc
stevp19Bitchin: I didn't know Stand By Me was adapted from The Body. Now I wonder if it's not just a coincidence that S1E4 of Stranger Things is also titled "The Body".
er1127:Dustin: Of course. STB was adapted from the novella. E4 has so much of STB in it, to be specific. Tone wise, and drama wise. The shot of them behind the ambulance, coming to grips with death is a homage to STB, but they put their own spin to it, with their own story. Mike running home is the drama, loss of innocence portion of it. Que the sad music. The aftermath with the funeral and the subtleties are STB like... things are not as crystal clear as they appear, more so, life at a young age. It's ST S1's best episode imo. It's my favorite. Might be top 3 series wise, or number 1.
strthings333Friends don't lie: I know we talked about this before, but these are actually parts of two episodes. One can make a case that The Body is also one of the best, but that emotional montage beginning at the quarry is Holly Jolly.
er1127:Dustin: Oh ok. I've only watched S1 three times, I think I'm gonna binge it again soon.
er1127:Dustin: I feel like e4 doesn't get as much praise/ shouts out for it's homage to STB... bc the mainstream barely knows about STB unlike Goonies? Possibly... i really love this episode
JMAN0723: Never liked the goonies. Stand by me felt real. The cursing, bullying, and sad endings. Stranger Things i feel tries to tie everything in a bright ribbon for the audience
er1127:Dustin: I agree. The Goonies didn't develop any of the characters, so it seems off. Parts of it are too slow, lagging off... a lot of mischief which is cool, but there is not much else. Plus, the bad guys are treated like stupid italian blue collared people who serve absolutely no threat to the kids. I am exactly sure that they do or should.
MyNameIsNotRyn: I remember this show!
er1127:Dustin: I'm 17, but I figured I watch it. I liked it, but of course it's done in a way to directly make each episode short and snappy for younger kids. Still compelling at any age tho. The main kid is easy to like, along with his friend.
JMAN0723: Damn you are half my age lol. Much different time back then but its great nostalgia
er1127:Dustin: I'm trying to live my youth years well & use them to my advantage.
JMAN0723: Good. You seem like someone who is oldee than you are. God Bless You. You would of liked the 80s and 90s
er1127:Dustin: Thank you. I like to watch older films. I really like sci-fi, horror, thriller, character dramas, coming of age, etc.
JMAN0723: Thats cool. I actually taught some film classes about film noir, scifi horror genre. If you have any questions let me know
er1127:Dustin: Could you recommend me some? There's some that I should add to my list. Thank you.
JMAN0723: God there are so many. Depends what era you like best. Do you like the teenagers story or an adult story. Also which genre you prever?
er1127:Dustin: Teens & adults, sci-fi thriller, sci-fi horror, horror thriller, or thriller with family drama, intense character dev depicting real real life, (like Breaking Bad) i like it all.. Teens always have the nostalgia factor, which is always great, but I like it from both
er1127:Dustin: This is a kinda old post, but i made a horror short film a little while ago, if u wanted me to link it or u were interested in seeing it
JMAN0723: Sure I would be happy to check it out
er1127:Dustin:
https://vimeo.com/287703753 JMAN0723: Watched it back in the day. Joe Dante. Also tim hunter who directed Rivers Edge directed several episodes
er1127:Dustin: Yes, did you see Explorers with Phoenix, Hawke, & Jason Presson? Pretty good film, very similar in tone to ST. I read that they had to quickly get the film done, which is why the 3rd act dipped in quality. The premise is really good at heart.
JMAN0723: Saw it but wasnt a fan of it. Similar flaws i see in ST Season 2
er1127:Dustin: I liked it, thought the last parts were a huge let down
er1127:Dustin: U can argue that the troubled kid in Explorers has the same problem in character development as Max & Billy. They tease issues, but don't show you anything. Over time, they lose suspense, and valuable plot progression.
JMAN0723: My favorite 80s teen movies were Stand by me,rivers edge, and heathers. Much darker but more realistic
er1127:Dustin: Stand By Me is my all-time favorite. The novella is really good too. I like Running on Empty (which Phoenix is in), a lot, It (2017), the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, Jaws, Super Dark Times, The Nice Guys, The Spectacular Now, Kids, and Superbad, to state a few.
JMAN0723: Good list
er1127:Dustin: The Spectacular Now looks cliche, but stirs from it... a sleeper.. future cult classic
gf120581: I expect "Eerie Indiana" has some influence on ST simply by being a series about kids in a small town in Indiana investigating supernatural events.
You'd be surprised how popular the show is, however. It didn't have the longevity of other spooky 90s kid shows like "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" or the "Goosebumps" TV series, but it was so memorably weird and creative that it stuck in people's memories.
er1127:Dustin: The first episode was cool, with the kids looking into the situation with the EverWare lady (accuse me if i get the company wrong), & her kids... i bet it entertained a lot of kids in just 20-25 minutes
gf120581: It was essentially "Twin Peaks" for kids, combined with the sensibility of folks like Joe Dante as "creative consultant." And it did a really good job of capturing the sensibility that fuels much kid-themed supernatural stories; that there's a whole hidden world that adults can't see and only kids can deal with.
I should mention, however, that while ST does take a few pointer from it, the real spiritual successor to "Eerie" is "Gravity Falls."
er1127:Dustin: Twin Peaks has many adults as leads, right? I don't mind it, as I really enjoyed Breaking Bad for instance, but in a ST type show, I wanna see at least one teen dealing with the issues. I wanna get into Twin Peaks, but... I definitely should get through 3-4 episodes in a sitting anyway.
er1127:Dustin: I hope Are you afraid of the dark has just one teen ensemble... Fakanaga (screenwriter on It, i think i misspelled his name) is good at developing a story, so... i hope it goes that way
MoshMunkee: saw a few eps, it was a pretty good show.
