Written for Day 4 of the 2018 Eerie, Indiana advent calendar challenge. The prompt for this one was "amnesia", submitted by
eviinsanemonkey:
"Wow," said Dash, in a tone that clearly indicated things were, in fact, not even remotely wow. "You're taking this way too hard. Quit over-reacting."
Marshall's grip tightened around the ravaged cardboard shell that had once been a Deluxe Jumbo Edition Reeses Peanut Butter Cup calendar, in association with Mutant Attacks. Twenty-four little doors hung limply, the hollow places inside dark and empty. The large door at the centre, the one saved for Christmas Day, had been torn away entirely, and the space that should have contained a limited edition Radiation Ravager Mutant in a festive red-and-green colour scheme gaped like a wound devoid of both blood and over-priced plastic tat.
"Over-reacting?" he raged. "It's the fucking third of December, Dash! And you've eaten my entire calendar and stolen my collectable Christmas zombie! This is- this-" he sputtered, unable for a moment to form coherent words, then gathered himself to deliver the final blow. "This is like living with Syndi all over again!"
Dash pulled the little two headed figure from it's hiding place behind the sugar bowl and threw it at Marshall.
"If I was Syndi you'd be getting pieces of him with ransom notes until Easter," he said. "And I think she'd agree, you're being really insensitive right now."
"You ate my advent calendar!" Marshall shouted. "How am I the insensitive one?"
"I have possibly-alien corn cult amnesia," said Dash. "I don't know what an advent calendar is. I don't even know what days of the month are. What's Christmas? What's December? I don't know, nobody told me. Some crazy guy just started screaming at me about his peanut butter candies... I guess that's the holiday spirit for you."
"You blew it with that last part," said Marshall. "I almost felt bad for like a second until you pretended you couldn't remember what month it was."
"I knew as soon as I said it that it was an over-sell," Dash admitted. He lifted the sugar bowl, picked up a heavy cream-coloured envelope and handed it over. "That's the ransom demand for your Reeses, by the way."
Marshall opened it, pulled out a sheet of kitchen paper covered in cut-out magazine letters. He made a face, wadded it up into a ball and tossed it in the rough direction of the bin.
"Fifty dollars?" he said. "Nice try. I only paid $20 for it in September and Radford's got them on clearance for five bucks each right now."
"See?" said Dash. "Amnesia. Now I'm forgetting how much you paid for a sheet of printed cardboard and three bucks worth of chocolate, which is good because you wasting twenty dollars for something I could have stolen in bulk might actually kill me."
"Shut up," said Marshall.
"Dead," said Dash. "Done in by outer-space dementia and your stupid holiday crap."
"You don't have space dementia," said Marshall, walking to the edge of the peeling linoleum tat marked the boundary between kitchen and lounge. As he peered out into the hallway, he could see that the door to the master bedroom stood open. The distance between him and it was a minefield of discarded laundry, half-melted summoning circles, and dog toys. Tricky, but doable, if he was fast enough.
Behind him, Dash was now insisting that he couldn't read the chore wheel due to worsening memory problems, and Mars would have to take over his share of the dishes.
Marshall shook his head.
"You don't have space dementia," he said again. "What you have is a Girl Scout Cookie-of-the-Day selection box that my Mom made for you." He stepped out onto the threadbare carpet, smirked, and turned to look Dash in the eye. "But not for long!"
A ragged stuffed jackalope cost him precious milliseconds as his foot snagged on one long floppy ear, but a moment later his hand was on the doorknob separating their room from the rest of the house. He slammed it, threw his weight against it, and was rewarded with a thump against the other side as Dash got there moments too late.
"Hah!" he shouted through the thin layer of fibreboard. "Bet you'll remember the time you lost your entire stash of Thin Mi-" He looked at the unmade bed, at the torn-open presentation box and the scattering of crumbs nestled among empty cellophane.
He swore. On the other side of the door, Dash laughed.
