Written for this year's
Advent Calendar Challenge. The first prompt was "copy" and was submitted by
deifire:
Marshall made one last adjustment to a flyer advertising home exorcism classes and stood back to admire his handiwork. Simon's marker-pen rendition of a steaming plum pudding took centre stage on the Eerie Public Library's Community Notice Board, now ringed by a holly wreath constructed of carefully folded posters, playbills and "human sacrifice wanted" ads done in shaky handwriting on the back of blood-stained napkins. It seemed Eerie's local cults could never quite get it together enough to afford professional printing.
There was a disapproving sniff behind him.
"Don't you think it's a little early for Christmas decorations?" asked the Widow Dithers, dour-faced and black-clad and carrying a stack of romance novels that Marshall was pretty sure he recognised from Syndi's hold list.
"It's after Thanksgiving, Mrs. Dithers," he said, slapping on his brightest, most patron-friendly smile.
The Widow Dithers merely glowered at him behind a tiny set of pince-nez glasses that were almost certainly made of ordinary window glass, before stalking off in the direction of the parking lot.
Marshall headed back to the lending counter, indulging in a stealthy eyeroll as he did so. Unlatching the little wooden door that separated the area behind the desk from the rest of the library, he crouched and rummaged in the cobwebbed alcoves beneath the work station.
Dash X looked up from the Definitive Guide to the Sights and Sounds of Eerie, published by the Eerie Chamber of Commerce in 1966 and currently being transformed into the Annotated Guide with the help of a highlighter, a Bic pen and a lot of rude words. He scowled as Marshall pulled out a battered shoebox containing blu-tack, drawing pins and the wiper for the dry-erase board.
"Don't be such a fucking pushover, Teller," he said. "Your little sidekick spent most of last Saturday getting that stupid pudding thing right, don't wipe it off just because the wife of a serial dog-murderer gives you a hard time."
"I'm not," said Marshall, sorting through dried out ink pads and lending stamps where the date had jammed on 16/6/66. "Have you seen the red and green pens?"
"One of the early-years literacy groups got into them," said Dash. "I'm not saying it was Harley, but there's a summoning circle on the north-west wall of the kid's reading room, so it was definitely Harley."
He rummaged through a desk tidy made of cardboard tubes and what looked like a collage of Hieronymus Bosch paintings, and managed to come up with an only partially-masticated black chalk pen. This he threw straight at Marshall's face, and looked disappointed when Mars managed to both dodge the impromptu projectile and grab it before it skittered under the reshelving trolley.
"That's the last one," said Dash. Marshall uncapped it, wrinkling his nose at the combined smells of solvent and toddler spit, and headed back to the notice board.
He added a monochrome Santa Claus, a sprig of holly and what was supposed to be a sleigh loaded with presents, although it turned out closer to a very fat robin, so after few frustrating minutes he decided to add a beak and just go with it.
Something stringy and metallic hit him in the back of the neck and he let out a short involuntary shriek before realising it was tinsel and not the ropy appendage of some nameless abomination released from deep within the reference section.
He glared at Dash as he untangled the length of red and gold foil.
"So you're stealing Christmas tree decorations now?" he demanded, reaching up to tuck the trailing ends in the gap between the wall and the notice board.
"Nope," said Dash. "There's a milk crate full of them back here. Old Lady Abernathy asked me if I wanted to help decorate while I waited for you to finish up here. I told her no, but that was before I knew we were doing it out of spite."
Marshall shook his head sadly.
"She's pushing thirty-five, you know," he said. "She's probably got that old person disease that makes her forget stuff."
Dash nodded.
"There's no way she'd expect me to set up the Christmas tree otherwise," he agreed.
