"Trains," said Andrea, chasing the last bit of ice-cream around her sundae dish with a long handled spoon.
"Trains?" asked Marisea.
Andrea nodded.
"Steam trains are best," she said. "But the realistic looking kind, not the cartoony Thomas the Tank Engine kind."
Marshall looked up from his half-finished Black Cow, a crumpled shopping list spread out on the table in front of him.
"Trains?" he said, his tone echoing Marisea's.
"Yes," said Andrea, who was now examining a glace cherry with a dubious expression. "Little model trains. That's what my dad likes. That's what I'm getting him for Christmas."
"But..." Marshall seemed to be struggling with something. Andrea hoped no little wisps of unvarnished reality had escaped with her out of her home dimension. They were never good for a human mind. "But he's the God-King who reigns supreme over a land of monsters. He can't like toy trains. My dad likes toy trains."
"So?" said Melanie. "What, there's not enough trains to go around? My dad collects them too."
"And mine," said Janet. "He likes the bullet trains, though, not the old fashioned steam ones."
"Oh," said Tod. "Did you see the gift shop at the Model Railway Museum has the 0 Series Shinkansen replica in the window? My old man would love that." He added a hasty scrawl to the piece of paper half-hidden beneath a plate of French fries.
"Good idea," said Janet, and did the same. "We should head up there once we're done here. It's practically a one-stop shop for dad-related purchases."
"Well, not quite," said Melanie. "A true dad shop must stock at least seven movies featuring Sean Bean at all times."
Janet, Andrea and Tod nodded.
"And at least three of them have to be Sharpe," added Andrea, and the other three chorused their agreement.
Simon looked down, uncomfortable. Marisea pulled out a copy of the Eerie Postal Service's Holiday Gift Guide and began quizzing him about which cuddly toy rendering of a philately beast would make the best gift for her newly arrived niece, Mary D. Carter.
"Okay, wait," said Marshall. "I can accept that there's a dad hive mind that creates a mass love affair with model railways and Sharpe, at least in this dimension, but how does King Wyrm even know about Sean Bean? I thought you didn't have television back home."
"Oh, we have it," said Andrea. "Or I mean, we did. It fell out of use when all these bartender guys kept popping in through the screen and trying to start maize cults. Most of us are obligate carnivores and the rest are life-drainers of one sort or another, so it got a bit annoying and most everyone ditched their TV sets."
"Wow," said Marshall. "Dash is gonna be mad he missed this."
"Really?" said Andrea. "I would have thought between the family togetherness, the goodwill to all men, and the paying for things with actual money, this would be his idea of hell."
"That's pretty much what he said," said Melanie. She made a futile attempt at wiping up the viscous red stains left by an overflowing Cherry Cornade, shrugged, and grinned at the others. "You ready to go?"
"Actually, if it's okay I'm going to borrow Simon for a bit," said Marisea. "I need a present for a psychically-inclined newborn and he needs to shop for Harley, so we're headed to Noel's Knick-Knack Bric-a-Brac Emporium to look for evil dolls and soul cages."
Simon gave her a grateful smile and she squeezed his hand under the table. Marshall looked like he was about to say something, and she cut him off quickly.
"And then I was thinking we could stop by Evil Eye Vinyl." She grinned. "They've got a great selection of Carpenters albums and I happen to know they've got Christmas Portrait as part of their in-store soundtrack."
"Sounds great," said Marshall, sounding distinctly unenthused. "So do you guys want to meet back up with us at the big corn statue in a couple of hours?"
"Will do," said Marisea, sliding out of the booth and leaning over the table to give Andrea a quick kiss. "Have fun with the Yorkshireman and the tiny trains," she said to the others as she pulled on her coat.
They waved and the shop bell tinkled as she left, pulling Simon along in her wake.
"So, you like the Carpenters too?" he asked, after they'd walked in silence for a few minutes.
Marisea turned to him and smiled.
"Do I ever!" she said. "Did you ever see their TV special, Space Encounters?" Simon shook his head. "I've got it on VHS at home, I can make you a copy if you like?"
Simon nodded enthusiastically.
"But first we've got some very serious work to do," said Marisea. "Do you still have that flyer I gave you?" He nodded again and she scanned the street, checking for gun-toting postal carriers and well armed huskies before continuing, "Okay, so... philately bison, bald eagle, or wendigo? Where do you land on it?"
Simon turned the glossy pages carefully, his mouth pursed in concentration.
"Jackalope," he said. "It's cute enough that it wouldn't frighten a baby, but it's antlers form a protective configurarion that would ward off any malign spirits that might try to get at her."
"See?" said Marisea. "This is exactly why I wanted you along. You're the only one who knows how to shop for a supernaturally inclined pre-verbal child."
"Well, I'm not sure how much help I'll be," said Simon. "With Harley it's mostly about trying to keep him from cracking other people's minds like an egg. It's damage control more than anything."
Marisea shrugged.
"And yet every year you're digging up cuddly dobermen and kitchen playsets featuring pea soup and My First Infernal Contract kits," she said. "Not even Radford carries that stuff, not if you don't special order it. Where did you even get a Baphomet bookbag to fit a seven year old?"
"Souvenir stand at the Eerie Petting Zoo," said Simon. "It was in the clearance sale."
"Weird," said Marisea. She stopped outside the long plate-glass window that ran the length of the Eerie Post Office and Shooting Range, eyeing the colourful display of stuffed stamp-coated animals frolicking in a mail-themed winter wonderland. "Jackalope," she said with a smile, and pushed open the heavy double doors.
Simon looked around at the shelves stuffed with expensive merchandise.
"I'll wait for you by the fish pond," he said. "The semi-corporeal fur-bearing philatery trout should all have their winter coats by now so I'm going to check that out."
Marisea nodded, the motion limited by the floppy ears and branching antlers of the huge stuffed jackalope already in her arms. Clearly, she was a mission-orientated shopper.
"Back in a mo," she said, her black patent shoes clicking across the polished hardwood floor as she headed towards the lone cashier.
Simon took a seat on the broad lip surrounding the traditional post office fish pond. The occupants, sensing motion above them, gathered just below the surface, eyes bulging with curiousity.
"Hey guys," he said, dipping one finger into the pool and running it lightly across the translucent scales. "How's it going? Getting all nice and winter fluffy?"
The fish being fish, did not answer.
A shadow fell across him and he looked up at Marisea's floral-patterned winter jacket.
"D'you get him?" he asked.
Marisea nodded, hefting a plastic carrier bag as big as her torso.
"Got you something too," she said, reaching into it and producing a much smaller package, wrapped in red and white candy striped paper. "As a thank-you for helping me out with Maridee."
"You didn't have to-" Simon started to say, but his treacherous fingers were already peeling back the wrapper.
A plush philatery trout stared back at him, it's scales tiny intricate scenes of snow covered landscapes, it's fins trimmed in white lace.
"Oh," he said. "Oh, Marisea."
"He's called Rainy Day," said Marisea. "I thought you might like him."
"I do," said Simon, clutching the little fish to his chest. "I really, really do."
Marisea grinned.
"Alright, Max," she said. "You ready to go indulge in some Seventies easy listening with me?"
Simon beamed back at her.
