"I don't get it," said Simon, stirring the drifts of ravaged cardboard with the failing toe of one battered sneaker. "I thought you wanted the Corn Critters sneak peek advent calendar. You made me stand in line with you at the Eerieplex to get one, even though it rained blood from the sprinklers the whole time we were there."
"It wasn't blood," said Marshall absently, on his knees amidst the tattered paper strips. "It was corn syrup and Red Dye Number Seven. Basically, Cherry Cornade."
Simon shuddered. There were so many things that were worse than a rain of blood, and being dosed with Cherry Cornade while inside a giant shrine to an eldritch popcorn god was one of them. Who knew what otherworldy beings would be drawn to the traces of it that now marred his sticky, sticky soul?
"Okay," he said, setting aside his possible damnation for another time. "Blood, Cherry Cornade, whatever. We queued for over an hour so you could spend twenty dollars on that thing, and you just tear it up?" He paused, dread weighing down his tongue. "Were the previews... bad?"
Marshall looked up from where he was trying to piece together twenty four inch-high images that, taken as a whole, would provide the discerning Corn Critter fan with an exclusive insight into the plot of the upcoming instalment, Corn Critters 7: Rise of the Super Crop. His gaze was haunted.
"I don't know," he whispered. "Syndi-" He swallowed convulsively. "I only got to see the first screenshot before Syndi took a sharpie and blacked the rest of them out."
Simon gasped.
"But why?" he asked, struggling to wrap his mind around the enormity of the crime. "Did you call her a cinephile again?"
Marshall shook his head. His fingers scrabbled in the debris, coming up with a small, waxen disc of greasy brown.
"It was a joke," he said. "Just a joke. The sneak peeks were great, but the chocolate tasted like melted candles and sadness. I thought I could swap them out for the ones in Syndi's Desserts of the World calendar and she wouldn't notice."
"She noticed," Simon guessed.
Marshall nodded miserably.
"I should have wrapped the replacement candy in gold foil," he said, his voice hoarse with regret. "I should have known she'd figure out the difference between a Marc de Champagne truffle and a chocolate coin stamped with the Corn Mother from Dawn of the Corn."
Simon knelt beside his best friend, putting one small hand gently over Marshall's own.
"Yes," he said quietly. "Really, almost anyone would have seen that coming."
