The Angelus thing is always a sore point for me. Yeah, Angel is just as capable of doing things like Angelus, but the idea the show put forth was that Angelus is a demon and a demon can't help but do that kind of stuff. It's a gray area for sure, but I've always like the idea of the internal cage with Angel-that when the soul is in charge, the demon is in the cage and unable to influence any decisions and vice versa. It's an interesting image, and resonates in the whole Klaus!Alaric thing from season two, in which we are left to debate how Alaric's experience with Klaus in the driver seat really went.
The thing is, the show is going back to do all this Original mythology and trying to put their canon down in cement. Unfortunately, that means that they're going back in time and blatantly ignoring everything they don't think fit in with their newly constructed canon. But the fact that it was shown before makes it canon, might even make it the primary canon, and so these flashbacks take us further and further back so Kevin and Julie can say "See! It was totally like that from the start, and you can't argue with us because we wrote the start!" The historical inaccuracies and huge leaps of believability are going to make 3.08 hard to watch (I won't go into details since you're only at 3.03).
That being said, I still love the show-but I don't like being pulled about by the nose. Character development seems to be unaffected for now, but again this Switch business puts a serious cloud over any Stefan-characterization to come in the future. The boy doesn't need an out-he needs to realize that he's no less/no better than Damon and Elena needs to understand the realities of dating a vampire, because they are always going to be non-human and no mask will hide that forever.
