Vampire Diaries, 2.21, And The Sun Also Rises

May 06, 2011 12:47

So, as far as wrapping up the doppelganger storyline, I’m not that upset with the show. The episode was actually pretty good-BUT, there are issues that need to be addressed, issues that could have been easily avoided with some FORWARD PLANNING!

Fuck This Body Count, Writers-Eena Is Done!

So, we go back to my one, continuous complaint against our beloved show. The Body Count. Just to put it into perspective for you guys, we lost (in just one episode) FOUR characters, two of which have been part of the cast since LAST SEASON! Let’s go through them, one by one:

Jules

I’m not as surprised or annoyed by this one. We knew some people were going to die, and Jules has had a target on her head for a while. She tried to kidnap Elena, she tried to kill Damon, she DID kill Rose (or is, at the very least, responsible for her death), and she helped cage up and TORTURE Caroline. BITCH WAS GONNA DIE.

I have never been a Jules fan, but I’m trying not to let that get to me right now. From a mostly objective point of view, she had reasons for doing everything she did. There’s nothing to suggest that her past experiences with vampires haven’t been altogether awful. We don’t actually know much about Jules past, but we do know she’s dedicated to the idea of a pack, or at least helping other wolves. She did that with Mason, she tried to do it with Tyler-loyalty to her own kind isn’t something to hold against her. Being completely PREJUDICED against all vampires and trying to get Elena-I’ll hold that against her. But, perhaps, she had rational, legitimate reasons for all her actions that would help put everything into perspective.

Regardless, her death is not that big of a surprise. Klaus was going to do some damage before our heroes could stop him, and the only other real option was Tyler (which was never going to happen).

Greta

I know this bugs people. I know that there are a lot of people annoyed by the fact that so many women died last night. I feel that way too; and I also feel like we lose a very interesting storyline in Greta herself and what has brought her to this point. That being said-SHE WAS ALWAYS GOING TO DIE!

Let’s face facts: the girl was cool, but she was Team Klaus. That is Team Kill Elena, and we all know the one golden rule of TVD: ALL THE BAD SHIT WILL EVENTUALLY COME DOWN ON THOSE THAT TRY TO HURT ELENA GILBERT! It’s like Murphy’s Law, only it probably should be called Williamson’s Law, or Plec’s Law. Whatever-that’s the way it goes on this show.

Also, how else could it have gone? The girl was dedicated to Klaus, apparently of her own free will, and she was one badass witch. How was Bonnie supposed to attack Klaus without having to deal with Greta as well? Greta was ALWAYS DOOMED TO DIE; she’d been doomed the second Klaus picked her up. And it’s actually a bit like symmetry, because now the whole Martin family is dead-and yeah, IT IS TRAGIC!

But there was no other way.

John

Dave Anders is one of my all time favourite actors. HE’S GOOD IN EVERYTHING THAT HE DOES! Whether he’s the good guy, the bad guy, the anti-hero, or the ambivalent guy-he does good work. And he was phenomenal as John. He took a character and made him unlikeable through real, dedicated acting. John was bigoted, conflicted, rash, and underhanded-and D. Anders played that to the hilt.

Now, his death-I kind of felt it coming since 2.17, when Elena mentioned that he was her only real parent left. Right then, I was like DAMN! HE SO DEAD NOW! And let’s just face facts people: being a parental figure to Elena Gilbert is a lot like being out after sunset in Sunnydale without a stake or a cross-IT’S MORE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH THAN SMOKING!

However, John has also changed a bit this season. He’s learned to try and trust (although he didn’t really try until the end), and I have come to see and appreciate that he does love his daughter. And the Gilberts have never been more interesting than they have been in the last half of this season. I wanted to see his history, his relationship with Isobel, his brother, and his sister-in-law. I wanted to hear about his decision to give up Elena, and what he does when he’s gone out of town. Did he hunt vampires away from Mystic Falls?

Basically, I kind of accepted that he WOULD die, but I have never better WANTED him to live. But the way he got to go out, I felt that was so true to his character. John is always running to the extremes to protect his family. He’s never been as willing to work with others as he was last night, but I still felt that this would be his exit. He would die trying to protect Elena. And it was a good death-he didn’t die just to make sure Elena would see another day. He didn’t do the spell to make sure Elena wouldn’t be a vampire because he hates vampires. He did it because he KNEW that Elena didn’t want this for herself, that it was something that Damon had forced on her. He did what he had to do for his daughter.

Also, his letter was just the most gut-wrenching way to end the episode. I loved his last words to his daughter, the way he apologized and conveyed his acceptance even if she had turned. And most of all, his dreams for her and her future. The mention of grandchildren, the idea of continuing the Gilbert line, and the ring to protect that future-it was beautifully done. Again, I wished it hadn’t come to this, but for once, the way TVD killed off a character felt right to me.

Jenna

THIS!

There is, absolutely, positively NO REASON FOR JENNA TO HAVE DIED THE WAY SHE DID!

Here’s the thing: I know the show tries its hand at being realistic, like how there really was no way to stop an indestructible vampire so the best thing to do was to just try to hinder him. I get it. But, some advice writers: MOST OF US WHO WATCH FANTASY TV SHOWS DO NOT WATCH FOR THE ‘REALITY’ OF IT!

As a television, this is a stupid move. The way they just kill off people is asinine. We have already lost so many members of the original cast, and that’s not a good way to keep a show running. Viewers get attached to these characters, they get invested in them. Killing a few now and then, spread throughout the series, is understandable. The Buffy and Angel series killed off members of their cast as well-but spread out those deaths over eight years. This show has killed over five regular characters in just two years! The shock value is gone! Resentment is settling in, and in reality, THERE IS NO REASON FOR ALL THIS DEATH!

Jenna never had to die. She shouldn’t have died. Her death coming on the heels of Isobel’s death and just before John’s is unbelievably stupid. Klaus is big and bad and mean-but why can’t he be pragmatic as well? He HAD Isobel under compulsion-she did everything he told her to do. If the show was determined to kill off Elena’s birth mother and the sacrifice needed a vampire-why not just wait to bring Isobel into the picture until 2.21?

Okay, she was needed to betray Alaric and Katherine, to trap them. But her death in the cemetery made no sense, because Elena was already well aware of how dangerous he was. He could have hid Isobel away and brought her back out for the sacrifice. She wouldn’t have fought like Jenna; she would have made it EASIER for him. And Stefan certainly wouldn’t have come rushing to switch places with her. THIS IS JUST BAD WRITING!

How exactly is Elena supposed to explain the disappearance of all her adult guardians? They live in a town with a vampire-hunting council-they’re not going to be able to bullshit their way through so many missing people. Leaving Elena and Jeremy on their own makes no sense and if they get over the deaths of their uncle/father and aunt so quickly, it diminishes them as characters. Essentially, Kevin and Julie have written themselves into a corner and used Jenna to get out, but how the hell is season three going to go at this rate?

Jenna’s death was disgusting, unnecessary, and a complete and utter let down to the entire fanbase.

Smarten up, guys.

Bonnie, You Are Now The Captain Of Team Badass

Bonnie, baby, you’ve been gone for two very long episodes and you have been missed. Nothing brightened my day more than seeing this mad, witch momma kicking ass, conjuring spirits, and being more BAMF than even the big, bad Klaus.

SHE PWNED HIS ASS, PEOPLE. SHE PWNED EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING.

I was a little annoyed with how the show used her as a means of pushing the humans to the sidelines. She knocks out Jeremy with a kiss and locks Alaric up in the house-it was weird and not really called for. Just another way for the show to say ‘hey, humans are kind of stupid and useless, so let’s just get them out the way’. This turning all Twilight-y people. Give the humans back their agency, give them the means to fight their own battles, and stop mollycoddling them for God’s sake!

I do like how Bonnie is able to manage so many things all at once. SHE IS SO STRONG, GUYS. She is ready for the Klaus attack, she is looking up spells to help Elena, she’s able to perform a locating spell, she is able to cast the connection between John and Elena, she puts Jeremy out with a kiss (still so hot! JONNIE!!!!), and locks Alaric up in the house-before she goes out to kick vampire ass. SHE ISN’T EVEN WINDED BY THE END OF THE NIGHT! For reals! Bonnie pwns everyone and everything on this show for the rest of . . . FOREVER!

The Other Love Triangle

And the only one I’m interested in right now. So done with the Stefan/Elena/Damon thing because Damon is so gross and rape-y lately. I have never shipped Elena and Damon before, and because of the last few episodes, I NEVER WILL! Seriously, how much are you supposed to forgive? NO ONE is that understanding.

But back on point: Matt/Caroline/Tyler is investing in my brain right now. I know it was kind of backburner to the more serious things (and why the hell did Caroline get left out of the night’s plans show? Why do you not let her badassery shine?), but the arc with them is going nicely now that Matt is in the know.

Mattie did so well this episode. After initially FLIPPING HIS SHIT ALL OVER THE DAMN PLACE, he’s come to a place of sort of understanding. When he talks to her, talks of the last few days together and how much he loved them, how much he loved the Caroline of them-he had me. He REALIZED on his own that vampire =/= evil person (though he understandably still hates Damon-don’t worry Mattie, you’re not the only one). He can see Caroline still, even if her mom can’t, and he can see Tyler still.

He just doesn’t know if he can juggle it all.

His life is hard, and he struggles so much-it’s not fair for him to have to handle all this extra stuff. And he’s scared of it, legitimately scared of it, because I think he’s come close to dying like four or five times this season alone. I don’t begrudge him walking out, because this is a lot to handle and he’s honestly not sure that he wants to. But he can come at it from the viewpoint of ‘not everything that isn’t HUMAN must die’. Mattie-haters to the back of the line-Eena still loves this boy.

Tyler and Caroline was sweet, because there is still so much there between them. I don’t see the end of the episode, where they’re cuddling and taking comfort in each other, as the official start of Forwood. I think we might have to wait for that, even up until season 3 (and won’t Damon get his panties all twisted up about that?), but I like that they’re getting past what happened before and that Caroline flat out tells him that he’s not leaving again, that he can’t leave, because he’s needed.

It was sweet, and it looks promising. I shall patiently wait for more.

Damon And His Dramas

Damon was slightly more tolerable this episode, but not by much. Honestly, Damon hand-waving the way he violated Elena still bugs me so much. He’s more concerned with her being angry at him than with acknowledging that what he did was wrong. The end scene with them, “I can’t handle you hating me forever”-YOU SUCK DAMON! IT’S NOT ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT! STOP BEING A SELFISH PRICK AND UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR DESIRES DO NOT TRUMP EVERYONE’S WISHES!

*Takes a deep breath*

Okay, so the show is trying to show this whole dramatic thing where Damon doesn’t want Elena to know he’s dying of wolfbite or whatever. I DON’T CARE. It’s stupid and pointless, because we know he won’t die (or he won’t stay dead). All it does is create a way for Stefan to exit stage left in a frantic rush to save his douche-bag brother, who will take the time to move in on Stefan’s girlfriend (I SEE WHERE THIS IS GOING WRITERS!). IT’S GROSS AND I DON’T CARE AND THE ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT IT WAS THE WAY STEFAN’S FACE FELL AND HE LOOKED SO SHATTERED FOR A SECOND!

Sidenote: Damon calls Klaus a ‘wolf-vamp’, which is very close to my own moniker of ‘vamp-wolf’ and not the ‘werepire’ one that is floating around. I don’t know why, but this makes me feel giggly.

Just to get back to what’s important: the show is setting up the season to end on a Delena note, like last year (sort of), and it’s sickening because of where they’ve taken the characters. Give Elena some goddamn backbone and tell Damon to shove it-JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE DYING DOESN’T MEAN YOU DESERVE FORGIVENESS!

End Notes

-Also, where the hell is Katherine? Elijah ran off with Klaus to find his other family members (real smart there, GODDAMN NINJA ASSASSIN! Not like letting your now completely indestructible psychotic brother live will come back to bite you on the ass), that means Katherine’s still under compulsion, right? So that means she can’t leave Alaric’s apartment, correct? Okay, if the writers write a whole season’s arc where Katherine becomes a squatter in Alaric’s home, I MIGHT forgive them some of the bullcrap of this episode. MIGHT.

-And what is with the honour thing among Originals? Elijah was all ready to take away his brother once Klaus swore on his honour or whatever. But Elijah swore on his honour to kill his brother. So is the honour thing actually binding? I would love for that to be the one Achilles Heel of the Originals-that they are always bound by their word. It’d be funny considering how backstabbing their children are (and Elijah could totally still honour his word by killing Klaus later-though the show has again written itself into a corner by making Klaus the unkillable of all creatures. They’re going to pull out some special bullshit to make this go away).

I’m doubly excited about this because of all the other Originals. Maybe one of them was the original doppelganger. Maybe this whole thing will finally be explained. Maybe the answer will be plausible and interesting and not contrived and full of Aztec shamans.

I can hope, right?

So , Liz is going to fuck up the finale. THAT WILL END SO WELL FOR HER!

See you next week.
