but unfortunately, today was not a good day for fish lovers...
this weekend, on a random excursion to walmart, we entered the plaza to discover a store, pet supermarket. the three of us, denise, tory, and i, decided that an inexpensive way to bond and have an outlet for our maternal instincts would be to buy a betta fish. so we got ourselves a pretty little betta who we gave three names, because three names are required to reflect his multi-national heritage. Enrique because he is latino (Denise), Sterling because he is Scotch-Irish (me), Valentino because he is Italian (Tory).
As you can see, he's completely gorgeous
And he lives in a giant martini glass.
So anyway, now I have concerns about my dear Enrique. Tory raised to me the issue of his acting sluggish here lately. I've conducted some research and, I'm concerned that his environment (the bathroom) is too cold because generally the bathroom is the coldest part of the suite. Alas, bettas are tropical fish and do enjoy tropical weather (76 - 80 degrees). So I have taken my clip-on lamp from my bed, placed it on the faucet, and strategically placed the lighting (not directly on his house) to warm his environment a bit without frying him. We'll see if this perks the dear up after a few minutes.
Now onto a new fish story. Yes, a second fish story.
This week is prank week for APO, a community service organization that my suitemates are pledging. Tory has chosen not to participate in pranking, but Denise is all about it. So apparently, there's someone in the organization that is completely terrified of fish. So yesterday, she and her friend took a trip to Walmart where they purchased two small fish of a yet to be identified breed. I think it's highly possible that they are guppies. Well, she and her friend bought the fish for a prank last night, but they didn't buy a bowl, or food, or anything. I found this suspicious and inquired as to what their plans were for the fish after the pranking. Their plans... well they were completely barbaric, and I simply could not let that happen! So I scurried around to prepare an environment for them. I was totally unprepared! Anyway, the prank that was supposed to go on last night has been postponed until tonight. Denise and her friend planned on leaving the two fish in the bag for 24 hours! Well, Sarahbeth and I protested. Two fish will not last that long without fresh air. So I transported them into a glass that Tory had, but the size was inadequate. Soooo, I found a seemingly small tupperware container, but it was actually sufficient because though it lacked depth, it had sufficient length for the two to swim around. The two fish are not very highly evolved, much less sophisticated than Enrique, that's for sure, and it seemed that they had not really mastered the art of swimming up. So I moved them into the tupperware and fed them a few betta fish pellets because we didn't have any other fish food to give them. I found a second tupperware container and contemplated separating them because one is much larger than the other and the potential for bullying, food hogging, things of that sort. I decided that they had already been moved twice in one day, and that was certainly traumatic enough for one day, and also, they might fare better with company.
I checked on them this morning before leaving for class, the two were fine.
This afternoon, however, I came home to discover the small one dead. I was all alone. I didn't know want to do it on my own. I removed his corpse, and I called on Sarahbeth's beau and made him send her down to witness the fish funeral with me. We had a moment of silence and flushed him. I felt so bad. I understand that it's just a fish, and that they don't really have a developed nervous system, but they deserve to have a chance at life at least! Man. I broke it to Denise, and she wasn't really upset. Tory was not upset because she claims that they are "low-class" while Enrique is "high-class." They may not be sophisticated, but I didn't want them to die.
Okay, so I'm sad, and I have a lot of stuff to do before I can go out tonight. We're going to Maggiano's tonight and then out to the club later I think. Okay, I have to perk up.
Love you.
