“Trevor, if I’m going to help her, you have to tell me exactly what happened.”

“I’d been out mowing the lawn. I came in for a break and she starting making us iced tea. She poured the water and added the powder normally, chatting away. Then, right when she took the ice cube tray out of the fridge, she screamed like I’ve never heard. I jumped up in panic, “Are you okay? What did you hurt? Cynthia! Cynthia!” but she didn’t respond to me at all. She got a chip bowl from the cupboard and popped all the little ice cubes out of the tray into the bowl. She went back to the freezer and took out the other ice cube tray and did the same thing. Then she sat down, right on the kitchen floor, cross-legged, with the bowl in her lap and started saying, “Melt! Melt! Melt!” over and over. I had to get down there with her before she said anything to me. When she did, it was a mile a minute with her eyes squeezed shut and tears coming down.”

“Try to remember what she said, Trevor.”

“She said, “Its us! It’s all of us! We are water, one whole. We all gushed from one tap, but society, the tray. We’re isolated in our own little moulds. Plastic walls on five sides. And we're all frozen. So cold. So solid.”"
