Regulating Abortion Thoughts in 2x17

So while watching “The Captain’s Hand” again last night, K and I got into a very heated debate about the issue of abortion in terms of what wins out, individual rights or the needs of the whole. So I decided to enumerate some of the arguments instead of studying of a medical school test I have this week. I’m sure there are more that I haven’t ( Read more... )

Your point is understood. I don't know the exact numbers but say that in the US, 5% of the total pop are doctors and with the total population of the fleet approximately 50000, there are approximately 2500 doctors in the fleet. Yes not all would perform abortons. So say only a fifth do, so that would be 500. It would be easy to supervise doctors if they were caught performing an abortion.

Personally, I am in the process of becoming a doctor. Just trying to kind of guess what people would do in that type of situation. I was caught performing an abortion and was restricted and supervised. Sure I could continue to do my job. But as a matter of politics, I might, just might strike and decide that there are other endeavors that would allow me more freedom and in concert decide to treat people on the sly. Okay, maybe that's a bit farfetched hehe.

Lets take another approach to this. Looking back at US history when abortion was illegal, there were many cases of botched abortions, women dying from infection or not having the ability to give birth otherwise. There were many quack doctors "performing" abortions to put it losely and instead scarring a woman for life. In the situation of BSG, I don't think that's too farfetched. Instead of "protecting humanity" by increasing it's population, you'd be relegating women who don't want to be pregnant to the possibility of no longer being able to have children or dying because they may go to a "doctor" to have an abortion performed.
