Inspired by
silanah, I want to get the word out about this petition. (I know many of you will have already seen it, so apologies for the duplication.)
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/AbortioninNI/ Currently, women resident in Northern Ireland cannot get an abortion on the NHS. Not just within Northern Ireland itself, but anywhere within the UK. This is the same NHS that they are entitled to for any number of other procedures, and the same NHS that will provide abortions to residents of Scotland, Wales, and England. (Northern Irish women who want an abortion must not only to pay to travel to somewhere else within the UK, but also for the costs of a private clinic.)
This petition is not to make abortion legal - or, rather, more available, as it's legal in very limited circumstances already - within Northern Ireland. That is a separate issue, and is not a debate I'm interested in hosting. This petition is simply to ensure that all women in the UK who are entitled to the NHS's services can avail of those services.
If you don't agree, don't sign. If you do, do. Please do also forward it to those you know who might be interested.
Please note that this petition is only open to residents and ex-pats of the UK. I can't sign, so you won't see my name there. That's part of why I'm showing my support by trying to raise awareness.
