Remember 9/11

I knew something was up when I saw stephsicola crying in the yellow subschool. Class had just ended, it was about 9 AM. We didn't even know about the Pentagon yet. When I got to English with Mrs. Alspaugh 10 minutes later it was all anyone could think about. It just couldn't quite sink in. My first reaction was that the plane's navigation system had shut down, or maybe it just hadn't been well maintained. Matt was the first one to suggest terrorism, Alspaugh didn't like it and told him not to jump to conclusions.

Then the rumors started. We knew something happened in DC, all we knew for sure was the Pentagon had been hit, others said the lawn had caught fire, so for the rest of the day all we did was watch the TV to know for sure. A lot of kids in my classes had parents in the Pentagon and were receiving pink slips from their parents to send them home. It was hard to watch, these kids watching the small window in the door to see if someone would say they could go home and make sure their parents were safe.

My mom worked the night shift at the time. She woke up at 5PM, completely oblivious to the day's events. I caught her right before she turned on the TV for prepare her for what she was about to see on every channel. She's thanked me for it several times since then.

Every year I'm going to remember less and less. It's sad to realize this, but that's how it goes I guess.
