I'm finishing my 4th year at sciarc - which just means that thesis is fast approaching. Lately I can't seem to get it out of my mind and I need to start writing down my thoughts and organizing them as I start to plan my project.
A few of the ideas I want to incorporate:
Temporary and Permanent building: planning a building that can never be called finished
This idea could use a typology such as amuseum that needs a flexible and constantly changing spacial arrangement. In the case of the museum - a structural framework would be part of the permanent building - planned and completed n the first phase of the project. The skin and finish systems would be changeable and temporary - not given any strict timeline but allowed to evolve and change with the use of the building.
Collaborative design & the new business model:
Another idea I have been kicking around is to study collaboration in design and work out a new business model for contemporary young architects that provides the security and power of a firm but the flexibility to let you run your office as its own business...this is really geared to sciarc students - especially a group of us that really want to put this model into place once we all graduate...basically something along the lines of 5% of profit will be paid like a "tax" the the company that loosely ties all of the involved parties together. That money is used to build our own projects, fund competitions, etc. and then say its me and 7 friends - we can all work independently, collaborate for big projects, and promote an alternative business model to the traditional mega-firm that is on its way downhill as project budgets get cut and canceled.
Thats all i got for now - i'm just going to keep storing ideas in here as time passes...at least keep a record of the evolution of my thesis project...
Aside from that all is pretty well, just keepiong in school. I'm trying to find a roommate for the back room in our apartment...so spending far too much time on craigslist lately.
ugg...bored with writing, ill ttys
