Papa M Coincidence

May 19, 2009 12:41

I woke up this morning and for some reason I decided that I wanted to listen to Papa M's mostly instrumental album, Live From a Shark Cage. When that album was finished, his album Whatever, Mortal came on. It's been so long since I've given those albums a good listen, I'd forgotten how pretty some of the lyrics are. He's two of my favorites from Whatever, Mortal.

Roses in the Snow

I was singing like a bird
from my porch just to hear
my own voice echo in the canyon
when she appeared before me
protected from the cold
ringing with the echo in her heart
she walked up to the porch
and I sang a good bit further
until we both sat there in silence
I asked her to my living room
a place where we can warm our bones
she said, but I am warmed by the singing
and I can hear my husbandman
returning from his labor
and I have no food on the table
as quick as she came earlier
she went back to the forest
with a trail of roses behind her
it snowed for many weeks
until I couldn't see the forest
and the blush had faded from the roses
and while it dropped I worked a lot
to gather wood and keep it hot
and clear the porch off for singing
it was brighter than the other nights
the snow was filled with moonlight
there was not a sound in the canyon
so I sang softly o my old song
building for a time so long
until my echo traveled through the forest
and there she was standing there
the moonlight in her auburn hair
completely protected from the cold
and all about her in the snow
ruby red and black as coal
roses had blossomed all around her

Sorrow Reigns

Sarah Jane
Sorrow reigns blue
Sarah Jane
Sorrow reigns blue

There was something like a wall between us
That stopped your going down on my penis
The ghost of lovers past
Still await your response
Was I just a medium in your seance?
I had to turn off all my feelings towards you
For I am not the one that rewards you
I'll be with other women and you'll be with other men
I can't help but wonder about what could have been

Sarah Jane
Sorrow reigns blue
You didn't love me the way I loved you

Back in 2002 I went camping with a girl I was dating. Her name was Irina and she was from Moscow, Russia. At the time, Live From a Shark Cage was on constant rotation in my cd player, so I decided to bring it along on our camping trip.
When I pulled the CD out of my backpack, Irina's jaw dropped and she said, "I know the guy who took that photo!" Sure enough, we looked through the album credits and found the guy's name and it was exactly who she thought it was.
Irina told me that she had met him through a friend and that at one point, since she was a photographer as well, he had taken her back to his apartment to show her some of his work. During this little tour of his apartment, he brought her into a room where he apparently had an extensive collection of recordings on vinyl. Live From a Shark Cage was separated from the rest of the collection, hanging on the wall.
Irina asked him about it and he told her the story of how he was a big fan of Drag City Records and how he had taken that photo in a Moscow subway station and had decided to send a copy of it to David Pajo. Pajo liked the photo so much that, obviously, he decided use it as the cover for his latest album. On top of using the photo for the cover of the album, Drag City paid for a plane ticket so that the photographer could attend the album release party.
