This morning after Jimmy left with the kids, I went into the kids' upstairs bathroom and found James' toothbrush still sitting there with toothpaste on it. I'd asked him before he left if he'd brushed his teeth and he said yes. The really interesting part about this is that I'd put all the kids' toothbrushes out with toothpaste on them the day before. So, not only did he lie about having brushed his teeth this morning, he hadn't brushed them yesterday either. So I confronted him about it. He said, "How long has that been there?" And I told him again, for two days. So I knew that he hadn't brushed his teeth in at least that long. And he said, "Oh, longer."
These kids have enough dental problems as it is. They all have fillings, even Selah who is only four and has had her fillings since before we got custody of her. I told him, "You need to brush your teeth EVERY DAY. You don't want to end up having DENTAL SURGERY, do you?" His eyes got wide and he shook his head 'no' most emphatically. Jeezus. What do I have to do to get these kids to use their brains?
On an up note, the boy is reading a chapter book, one page a night, to fulfill his 15 minutes of reading per day obligation. It's a Star Wars novel. And Alex is reading a book called Scary Stories. An odd choice, in my opinion, for someone afraid of the dark, but what do I know? As Jimmy says, "Who cares what they're reading, as long as they're reading." Amen!
