"The tree stays up 'til New Years, people, or there's gonna be trouble."

Just got off the phone with Jimmy. The latest is that Ericka wants us to drop off the kids at 10 a.m. Saturday morning, then pick them up from her house that evening. She says she is sick and may have to go to the hospital between now and then, and that the rest of her family doesn't care. Which is not the impression I got from Kristen & Jesse, or from their grandfather who sent us an e-mail requesting time with the kids, but that's not exactly a big surprise, is it?

I feel bad for the kids, because this will be their first Christmas missing out on the tradition of staying up until midnight to open their gifts with their extended family. From what Kristen told us, they would normally visit multiple relatives' houses, too. I got invited to attend a similar thing by a Mexican friend once, and unfortunately wasn't able to go, but it sounded like a lot of fun: at each house they have different food and they sing songs. Our little Christmas Eve by the fireplace with Christmas carols and cookies might seem a bit anticlimactic to them.

The good news is that Jimmy's company is having a little office party, then he'll be coming home early, hopefully by 3:30 p.m. Then I'll have a chance to go out and see if I can't get the last few things we had in mind for Alex, so I won't have to try and fit that in tomorrow. I can't believe that it's just a couple more days. The beginning of the month had a nice pace to it, but the middle went too quickly! I'm going to be sorry when it's over.

christmas, kids
