I got a call from my sister on Saturday night. I was right! Jeff planned the trip to Big Bear and the overnight stay in the fancy hotel so he could propose. I haven't seen the ring yet, and they haven't set a date yet, but I WAS RIGHT! It was so cool that she called me right away, I could hear how excited she was in her voice.
This turned out to be just a fabulous weekend overall. Jimmy and I went out to dinner Saturday evening, and then went shopping at Wal-Mart. I bought myself a copy of
Labyrinth on DVD. I've always loved that movie, and I'm very pleased to own it at last. Jimmy hasn't seen it, and I can't wait to introduce him to the joyous collaboration of Jim Henson, George Lucas, and Brian Froud, amongst others. I also got myself a copy of
Edward Scissorhands last week. I love it, too, and it's just Christmassy enough to pass for a holiday movie in my mind. I look forward to watching it, maybe on Christmas Eve.
Yesterday we slept in a bit, then went to a late breakfast. He'd offered to help me do something about my storage unit situation, so after breakfast we went over there. When I first rented the unit, all they had was a 10'x20', which was more than I needed. Over six months later, all my stuff was still in there, and I was still paying more than I needed to each month. He said he wanted me to set aside the boxes that I wanted to look through, and he'd do the rest while I was sorting through stuff. And he wasn't kidding. The boy moved BOTH my sofas while I was filling out the paperwork to transfer to a 10'x10'. AND stacked the sofas on top of each other. He moved a dresser that Ma and I had found really difficult to move, because you can't pick it up by the lid and it's on the heavy side even when empty ... by picking it up under one arm. Fortunately the new unit wasn't very far away -- just across the way and a few doors down from my old one. Everything fit just fine in the smaller unit, with a little room to spare. We managed to get everything sorted and moved in just over two hours. It took me and my kind and generous helpers three days to move everything down to the large unit in the first place. And, renting the smaller unit will save me $60/mo. My HERO.
Later on, we went to the hardware store and he bought a new doorknob for his bedroom door. One that locks. The other one didn't close very solidly -- it would drift back open if you didn't rattle the knob every time you shut it, and it didn't lock. We dropped some stuff from the storage unit off at my house, picked up my laundry, and went back to his place. I asked if I could do my laundry over there because they tore the clothesline down at my place when they started replacing the rotting patio wall. So, I did laundry and watched football with his roommate while Jimmy installed the doorknob, then we all had dinner together. Then he and I went back into the bedroom and watched
Big Trouble in Little China, which I hadn't seen before. I like movies that don't take themselves too seriously. After the movie, I took a shower to get rid of the last of the storage-unit dust before bed, watched him play his video game for a few minutes, then snuggled up and talked about nothing in particular until we fell asleep. Bliss!
