Every day the chance that I will be passing along my DNA grows smaller and smaller ...

This morning I came home to discover that Nana had experienced a bout of ill health during the night, so I would not be driving her to the daycare as planned. Instead, I was asked if I could spend the day with her. I agreed.

She was still in bed when I took over. She seemed really exhausted. When she finally did get out of bed, she snoozed in her favorite chair most of the morning. I had Ma's instructions for care and feeding, and followed them to the best of my ability. Half a glass of water every half-hour, to help combat dehydration. There was yogurt (usually a safe choice), then half a banana. A very small amount of hot cereal. All carefully calculated for maximum nonreactivity, but it still resulted in some cleaning up of puke. No big deal; it'll all come out in the wash, as they say. I felt bad, though. I said, "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" But she fell asleep again almost as soon as it was over. I'm sure it disturbed me more than it did her, anyway. She was quietly dozing in her chair when I was relieved at 2 p.m.

I hope she feels better soon.

caregiving, alice
