What Does it Mean for Someone to be Political?

Apr 15, 2002 13:32

In a survey of many friends, I have compiled a list of answers to this question. Some are rather interesting and few are even similar:

to go out of your way to not upset someone when you know damn well that they are wrong

political is taking both sides of an argument..telling one person one thing, and the other person a completely different thing,..sometimes it involves trying to do whats best for everyone..other times it is just to try and not play sides publicly

to try and not play sides publicly and to please the most peope

Being political means listening to others and doing what is necessary to make a majority of them content; then deal with the remainder of people in the least harmful way possible.

To be involved in or at least interested in political issues

they "answer" questions by being vauge enough to not take a side.

I think it is to take a stance / position on the issues, instead of avoiding them (which I would term apolitical)

taking both sides to favor your own goals

politics are "The often internally conflicting interrelationships among people in a society. "

politeness

Depending on context, for me it would mean either someone who paid attention to and cared about political issues, or someone who seemed to always be politicing and vaguely manipulating w/in a particular area (or even life in general)

telling people what they want to hear

it usually means that someone has something to hide and is willing to go to great lengths to hide it

it involves gaining support from people in order to attain any goal through any means necessary

well, we as human beings look out for ourselves...we make sure we're safe, if we get that raise, or we get that house, etc. in looking out for things like that, we use information to our advantage, or lobby for something, or position for that raise...so, i think being political is exerting power
where power is information; so being political is exercising and using information for one's own benefit or the benefit of others. to survive, we must exert our politics.

Suave, a smooth talker. Easily gets people to agree with them

To be active in expressing a belief set for how people govern each other.

to be political means to be an ass.

To be political is yo manuver yourself socially/work to look better simply by being in the right place at the right time, or to do the opposite to someone else, to sabatage someone, to badmouth someone behind their back and not say it to their face, to lie about someone to hurt them. To tell someone something someone else said in confidence to you without good reason... etc

i think its defined as someone who tries to persuade you into believing what they believe for the benefit of government (on any level.)

to be political one must care and one must stand for ones beliefs...even if thise beliefs are not the "correct" ones, one should know the subject, and not take things at face value.

Someone who is political is someone who believes in conformity, in that they hope for everyone within one of their areas of living will believe and support their ideas/beliefs and will go to great lengths to make more people believe in them as well

i think it means for someone to be involved in politics (social, governmental, etc.), by taking an interest in those issues which concern them and maybe trying to educate others and/or improve the situation

It means you're involved or concerned with the inner-workings of the political structure of an organization. (anything with a structure of people in power, I'd guess)

to be political is to care about and be involved in any structure that exists for the purpose of manipulating society

I'd say almost anything is political. anything dealing with a policy of any form. anything dealing with more than one idea of how something can be done. Being political is to favour outwardly such things.

Usually, it's a phrase tossed around in the interest of deriding another's opinion if they do not agree with you. If not meant in a negative, I would say: for someone to be political, I would suspect that they would need to hold to their opinion strongly and possibly act like a stereotypical manner of some "group" at the expense of some other "group"

I think it means to be active in pertinant issues - along the same lines as being an activist, but less aggressive
