Fandom: "The Queen and the Soldier," song by Suzanne Vega Length: About 1000 words Rating: R for violence and sex, but no sexual violence or consent issues.
Oh, wow, I really like this. It's not at all the story I used to imagine when I was obsessed with this song back in high school -- or at least, it certainly ends up in a very different place -- but I love the idea of him visiting her again and again, intruding on her solitude, until the tiniest crack appears in her facade. Now I can imagine the possibility of a different end to this story.
I think he's actually from Nepal or therabouts. (He could even be Chinese, but that's awfully "north-east.")
The setting came from writing it on the plane, realizing that Vega's carefully "could be anywhere and any time" wouldn't work in a longer piece, and needing some details I knew without having to research. Voila!
The marble inlay is a real technique, still in decorative use in the north.

I am so happy they are Indian! And there is reincarnation/ghost visitations/history repeating, which is a huge button of mine!
I especially love:
"You are a very uncomfortable woman," he said, after an unhappy pause.
"But surely that's exactly what you like."
And the Morgaine/Vanye-esque-ness of them. And the details of the jeweled walls.
And that it's her taking off her crown that changes things, of course.
