Happy new year, if it's yours!
I finally got around to writing things, so as requested,
Yuugi the Jedi and Atem the Sith,
the Destiny Trio meet the Doctor and something that got way bigger than expected: Yen Sid Not Approving of Riku and also how Riku acquired his KH2 outfit.
(
Promise Fallen Through )
So I shall start at the beginning and degenerate into incoherent babbling.
And even if he had, Yen Sid thinks, watching the way his apprentice watches the child, even if he had, he might not have cared.
It's a wonderful introduction on how Yen Sid and Mickey differ in how they view reality and where they stand, and how Riku plays a part as the corporeal form of their differences.
AND YET. AND YET. Yen Sid reminds himself that he has no reason to be pleased that his apprentice still trusts him.
"He'll shield himself," Mickey says, voice soft, "if he doesn't recognize the caster. Let me."
I know I've written about how I feel about Yen Sid as an old and elderly bigot before, and while the prompt is primarily about Riku, this fic makes me make happy noises because it's an expansion of Yen Sid as a character and how he interacts with others (the Fairies! that shook me), Mickey himself, Riku, and how he perceives everything in a detached, marco-analysis rather than Mickey's own micro.
I love how he's really just a grumpy grandpa, happy to see that his unruly son has grown up to a man but is ready to flip tables because his son brought a surprise grandson who's just as unruly and brings out the unruliness in Yen Sid's kid. You know what I mean. Rofl.
Truthfully, I think that Yen Sid's heart was probably moved a tiny bit, because I think somewhere deep deep inside his tired heart is one that revels in unruly children. And because it's Riku.
On the other hand, this is probably one of the best education that Riku will ever get. He won't be happy with it, I don't think, but Riku's the type of learner who prefers a challenge (and learning just to spite his educator.) Mickey's there, though, as moral support and buffer. (Poor King.)
You know what I'd love to see? ... Is Yen Sid's take pre- and post-Dream Drop Distance. Because it would be AWESOME.

He doesn't quite get Mickey in the same way that a lot of people with opposing personalities don't, but he's quite fond of him, even if his kidlet is a weirdo and brought home a weirdo kidlet of his own. (I am not entirely convinced that Yen Sid is not vaguely horrified by the whole thing in much the same way that parents whose children were hellions are horrified by the thought of said children reproducing. Because Riku's not even the same species as Mickey but OH GOD HE'S A (NOT!)PARENT NOW.)
Also, Yen Sid likes the Fairies. They are lovely and sweet and kind and are good at forging magic blades to kill things with. In times when his Tower is not plagued by miscreants, I am fairly certain they have afternoon tea together.
And there is no soft spot for that kid in his heart anywhere at all. Nope. Nu-uh never. Yen Sid does not approve of people using sheer willpower to force themselves to do things they shouldn't be able to do. At all. Ever. Even if it does remind him of Mickey.
Riku learned a lot while he was there! And also he finally got some decent sleep. Mickey approves of both of these things. (And is totally the proudest not!papa of them all.)
...you're right, it would be. Come out faster, game!

I cackled. But truthfully, this is seriously starting to seem like the most likely reason in my head. Every time I visit this idea, it just resonates rightly with me. If you take away Yen Sid's AUGH DUTY TO THE WORLDS, it would be this and Yen Sid's masochistic tendency of taking on students who don't follow the rules (his, the worlds', physics...)
re: The Fairies, I wonder how often they get to dress people. Actually, this brings to mind this: Kairi's clothes. Why does hers magically match Sora's and Riku's?

Given how enthused they get over Sora, I'm guessing it's not that often. And Kairi's clothes match theirs because somehow she knew. Princess powers, dreaming, etc. etc. I've written her as dreaming of Riku during the CoM-KH2 gap, so maybe she picked it up there! Because that makes as much sense as anything else in this series.
