Ever since the tragic passing of Uncle Pete, we've been in a BBQ rut 'round these parts. Blue Ribbon just hasn't been all that great the last few times I've gone. That truck down in Dorchetser (the name of which escapes me) was good, but keeps weird hours and is not always worth the trip. Lester's in Burlington was good, but also not always worth the schlepp. Redbones is still in business, and bully for them.
Well, imagine my surprise when I'm perusing Yelp over the weekend and discover
a new BBQ place recently opened right down the damn street from our house! I feel like I should have been notified about this sooner! Its just been sitting there since September, and I had no idea!
Anyways, we went tonight, and I am pleased to report it is great. Larry the owner is a great guy and spent quite a bit of time chatting with us. We got a metric ton of food for very little money. It was obscene, frankly:
We started with the fried pickle app, and it was great; M was especially pleased to see they were in chip form.
Then came the main course: death by pork. I got the pork rib and 3 meats combo, and chose brisket (phenomenal!), jerk pork (had a good kick to it), and sausage. For sides I got the beans and mac n' cheese. M got the pork ribs and North Carolina pulled pork (in a vinegar sauce) with collard greens (holy crap, they were good-- maybe the best I've had in years) and sweet potato fries since they were out of the candy jams. The fries were phenomenal-- just wedges of sweet potato lightly fried, not greasy at all.
I've never been a huge fan of pork ribs... honestly, I thought I was getting beef ribs with this combo plate because my reading comprehension was pretty low after a long day at work. But they were great. Nice dry rub, they didn't need any additional sauce.
The big hit of the evening for me though was the brisket. Wow. I cannot wait to go back and try the KC burnt ends. And the beef rib. Yes: rib, singular. Larry claims one of his ribs is a meal unto itself, so he sells them individually!
Oh, and the cornbread was amazing. Gritty, and dense without being dry.
They had red velvet cupcakes available for dessert, but alas, with approx. 15 pounds of leftovers coming home with us, I couldn't do it. But man, I'm a sucker for red velvet.
So yeah. Great place, great meal. Hope he's in business for a good long time. Looking forward to becoming regulars, and bringing everyone I know there. Prepare yourselves.
