About a year ago, I went for a consultation on Lasik surgery at the office of Stephen Dell, brother of Michael and one of the best eye surgeons in Austin. Unfortunately I was told in no uncertain terms that my vision is so terrible (one of my contacts is -10; the other is -9.5) that they'd have to take off too much of my cornea. So no Lasik for me.
This morning I got up at 8:30 and drove all over Buckhead (I had the wrong office, it turns out) and ended up at Piedmont Hospital for a consultation with Stephen Hamilton about getting contact lenses implanted in my eyes. It's like cataract surgery, except instead of taking out your cornea and replacing it with a fake one, they slide a contact between your cornea and your lens. It's completely reversible if the prescription changes or you develop halos or whatever.
The downside, other than the risk of infection, is that it's legitimate ocular surgery and thus costs $5,000 an eye.
I'm terribly torn. On one hand, it would be so great to never again have to worry about glasses or contacts. Especially when I'm traveling or if I move overseas. And everybody I know who's had their eyes fixed (of course, they all had Lasik, lucky bastards) says it's the best money they've ever spent.
On the other hand, of course, it's $10,000.
Sigh.
