The pet/housesitting people called yesterday. I knew I'd left the cat in the bathroom, realized it by the time I arrived home, and they were inquiring as to why he was in there. Also, he had a scratch or something on his eye and couldn't open it.
See, the dog had snapped at the cat. The cat ran into the bathroom. I let him have some space, didn't want to pull him out of the br since he was scared and nervous. I made the dog feel bad for snapping. A couple hours go by, I make sure the dogs and kitties are out of the house. I forget about Colby.
The owners took him to the vet. I called them several hours after the appointment, and it turns out he is going to lose his eye. LOSE HIS EYE! Could I be a worse petsitter if I tried?!
The woman sounded understandably upset, but didn't take it out on me. I just feel horrible. If only I'd checked on him or noticed right away. I know it's human error, but this is an eyeball we're talking about.
I am walking to the post office and sending back the check they gave me for the weekend. Enclosed is a pretty card,
Dear Colby and Folks,
I am so sorry about what happened to your eye.
April and Jason, please accept the check for pet/housesitting to go for Colby's care.
I am thinking about all of you during this difficult time.
Hugs,
Annette
In other, not-so-traumatic news, I helped some family friends clean their house yesterday. For 8 hours! What a long-ass day. My back is hurting from washing ceilings. Their home goes on the market today, so the help was desperately needed. And they paid me $150! I was stoked.
Claire and I tried this new thai place last night. It was delicious. We have decided we will eat there every day, but not really. Dominik says I eat out too much. I agree.
Yesterday morning, I ate the best breakfast ever: sliced banana, apple, & strawberry with vanilla yogurt on top and a glass of orange juice. I was full for hours and hours, which rarely happens in my life. I also went for a half hour walk and listened to music with my new ishuffle.
I'm pretty busy. Today, I am walking downtown to the post office, probably walking my dog and bathing her, too, washing laundry, and eating out with dominik (his turn to pay). I also need to file for unemployment and download more tunes for the shuffle-dealie.
Tomorrow night, I am spending time with a kid from my class- my favorite! His parents say he misses me desperately, which makes me feel both bad and good. A part of me wishes things had turned out differently. All in all, though, my life is working out.
