Computer dead. Currently living off a smart phone.

So I have two bits of news:

1) I've got an LJ app for my phone. It's less obnoxious than the Facebook one so I might actually use this one and post a bit more.

2) My PC isn't booting any more. Given prior symptoms (not reliably getting through the BIOS on startup for the last few weeks, certain fans not moving, increasingly odd noises from the case...) I reckon the motherboard is a gonner. I hoped that when I upped the RAM a few months ago that I could squeeze another year or so out of it before upgrading the whole machine. Given that a replacement board is likely to cost £50 I might as well upgrade the whole machine rather that waiting for the next thing to fail or become obsolete. Advice on building a budget machine with the ability to gradually upgrade components would be apprieciated (currenly I'm thinking a AM3+ board with a basic AM3 processor is a sensible way forward)
