If none of the tales were true, if the urban monk was completely mythological, then I would have to say this is some pretty bad story telling. I mean, if I were going to spread a rumor around town, it would be a lot more interesting than a tale about a man who is homeless, lives under a rock and may or may not be a spiritual leader. This is what was going though my head when I decided that thinking the urban monk actually existed was a silly notion. Then I saw him. At least I saw the person that claims to be him. And not once or twice. At least a dozed times. Inconvenient times. I would see him walking up Broad street while I was riding a bus to Baseline Ave. Or I would see him whiz by me on a bike as I walked to the co-op market. And most recently I passed him on the side walk, nearly bumped shoulders with him as I was rushing to meet some friends at Pearl street on Labor day.
Apparently the “urban monk” frequently hangs out at a little vegetarian cafe attached to the co-op market. The food at this cafe is really good. It's probably my favorite place to eat in Boulder. This cafe also serves some of the most surreal conversations with the most interesting people you'll ever meet. Every time I go in there, a conversation is almost unavoidable. The last time I was at the cafe I decided to bring Bradly's(the urban monk) name up. Just about everyone knew who I was talking about. What started as a conversation with a cafe employee quickly became a group discussion with five other customers. Everyone had something different to say but they all agreed that the urban monk was a little crazy. I didn't want to believe this. I thought, maybe he was just misunderstood.
But then there was this:
This image links to a video of the urban monk that pretty much sums everything up. In this video he mentions “Octogonal Poetoxocology”. If you've never heard of this, don't feel ignorant because it's complete nonsense and if you think these words are hard to read, try say them. It doesn't exactly roll off the lounge. Bradly demonstrates this in the video. Though this video presents a somewhat sad conclusion, it amuses me to no end.
So urban legend of the urban monk ends as a self-debunking myth about a spiritual leader who is clearly leading the insane. In this tale, homelessness and disarray is sugar-coated with terms like: “urban monk” and “Octogonal Poetoxocology”................no, not Octogonal Poetoxocology.
