So we're up at two or three in the morning following some nice physical pursuits, and a dog somewhere starts barking. One of our dogs starts barking too. Heather goes downstairs to check it out... and promptly hollers at me to call 911 -- the neighbors' house is on fire ( Read more... )

The neighbors' family members have been by to mourn, so I guess the erstwhile remaining doubts are pretty much gone.

They were very nice, and an interesting pair -- he was highly crotchety and cantankerous, mostly in a good way, and she was proper and sweet and churchgoing. Both were very likable. He went out to cut wood most days, even in his eighties, even in the summer. He grew up a couple of hills over, and there is a road that bears the family name.
