Okay, here goes ...
LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS:
Was written by John Winston Ono Lennon in 1966 and appeared on The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" album in June of '67. John worte the song one night when his first son, Julian Lennon, showed him a picture that he had drawn of his pre-school friend Lucy O'Donnel. In this picture Lucy is floating in the sky, with diamonds. He thusly named it "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".
After "Sgt. Pepper" was released reviews started coming in and the press happened to notice that the letters in "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" happened to spell out the acronym LSD, which of course is the name of a highly devastating halucinagenic drug. The press pointed this out to Lennon and interogated him on the subject demeanding to know whether there was some sort of hidden message: Was the song about LSD?
The answer is no. John hadn't even realised that the initials spelled out LSD, as he said when first asked and continued to so say for the remainder of his life. It had simply been about the drawing the Julian had made. Now, John was an advocate for peace who was constantly searching for an end to violence and also for truth. He was so avid about peace and about the truth. And though he might have lied earlier in his life about his motivations for the song, he certainly wouldn't have lied over and over again continuously when asked throughout his later life during his crusade against war and lies!
Now, he might have been ON the drug when he wrote it, as it was a time of drug experimentation for an entire culture (it was leading up to the Summer of Love [1967], anyway, which is the appitime [sp?] of drug use). But the simple fact is that he did now intentionally sit down and WRITE a SONG about LSD. The mix-up was entirely driven by media.
