I know I said I was happy with where I am, but I need to complain. I won't be able to concentrate on my reading until I vent.
I am so frustrated with the Daily staff. Seriously, I don't think they do a good job with my stories. I wish I could just say, "they know more, I'm sure they are right and I am wrong," but I can't, because I don't think its true. Today, our awesome in-depth made it onto the third page because Boren lost weight. Really though, is Boren being skinnier as important as international students gaining weight because America sucks? I, personally, don't think so. Maybe I'm bias. They didn't even add all the stuff we wanted, like a graphic that looks like a menu with tips and stats...Stephanie worked hard on those. They didn't put the other photo we wanted either, because it was on the third page. Once, the picture caption that went online had a different name than the person in my story...shouldn't that have been checked? When I helped out with Scene & Heard, they used non-funny quotes, most of which I didn't think were the best I had gotten. Anyway, the editing sucks too! Here are some things they've done to my stories so far: Completely changed the ending making it completely inaccurate, took out my ending and placed a random quote in the end without an explanation making it abrupt and not make sense instead of using MY ending quote, which could have stood alone easier and this time, they changed it around so it went from psychological and social aspects to international options in OKC to people not walking in the US...which I, and my group members, think jumps around too much. We had international options last because it WAS fairly random. We had an amazing ending we were all really proud of that they just took out completely. It's frustrating because they don't know the story and they deterrmine how to end it all...even if its inaccurate or completely random. I think my stuff is pretty good and judging by my 93% (which is high for Jack's class) and the fact that we made a 178 (out of 100) on our in-depth...I'm not an awful reporter. Bascially, change it if its actually going to be an improvement...but if you just want to do something to do something and look important, leave my words the hell alone.
Please. I don't want to get in trouble for bashing my paper or anything, but c'mon...My name is on their editing...I get blamed for the inaccuracy or complete randomness. What am I supposed to do? Take these clips to an editor of a paper and be like, "I know that quote is random and its all out of order...It's not my fault!" It doesn't look good complaining about my editors or taking the rapt for crappy editing. My awesome in-depth clip just went down a whole lot by being on the third page. It was front page work.
