Boy Accidentally Killed by Submachine Gun at Firearms ExpoSimply, what the fuck was that parent thinking. It's a fucking Uzi. He was *8 years old*. Enough said. I realize this is 'old news' but been meaning to just make this comment. I will leave it to peace873 to explain to anyone the physics and gun knowledge behind why this was a bad idea ( Read more... )

The gun-owning community is pretty much unified in blaming this on the firearm instructor, who should have known that a small boy can't handle a light-weight, high-recoil, stockless weapon. He was extremely negligent.

A brief physics refresher: For every action, there is an equal, opposite reaction. So, with a gun, a larger cartridge means a bigger recoil, and a heavier gun means a lighter recoil. The micro uzi is a very light gun which fires a 9x19mm cartridge, which is a moderate-recoil round. The problem is that, when fired in full auto, the result of each round's recoil is cumulative; i.e., each round moves the gun, say, 20 degrees. The rate of fire is 1700 rounds per minute, or about 28 rounds per second (i.e., the whole magazine). Since the grip on almost all machine guns is below the barrel, the recoil forces the muzzle (the end that the bullet comes out) up. The only limitation on how far the gun can rotate is the mechanical limit of the shooter's arm. So, to fire a micro uzi, you need to be a very strong person with an extremely strong grip and wrist.

Even firing a light-weight, semi-automatic (one shot at a time), 9mm pistol (like the Glock 17) is difficult for many adults.

So the guy responsible is a police officer. The police chief, no less. NICE.

The other two guys were assured by the cop that everything was legal. Unless they were part of the reason that a 15-year-old was giving out the machine guns (!!!!) I don't see why they should be charged. There should be something you can charge a cop with when they misrepresent the law and/or encourage someone to break the law.
