Title: Revolution dance
Pairing: Ohno/Tackey, hinted Tackey/Tsubasa, Ohno/Nino
Rating: Pg
Summary: There is a friendship, unexpected, borne from random circumstances. There is change, love, acceptance and revolution. Life may not work out as planned, but sometimes, one has to keep that good stuff, treasure it and grow along with it and maybe, one will find that things have a way of retaining what they're truly like underneath
A/N: Rarepair ftw? I honestly, don’t even know how this pairing came up in my head; the first two paragraphs have been saved in my hard disk since January and I figured that I should finish it. It’s not so much a love story as it is a story of friendship and of growth over many, many years.
1.
The practices are hard, so is the whole learning process. Tsubasa and Yara learn fast and Tackey finds himself pushing even harder to catch up. One day, he’s alone in a practice room when the door opens to reveal a rather intimidating character. Ohno Satoshi has been around for at least a year and everyone knows that he dances well. Ohno Satoshi has long hair, favours a certain style of heavy gold chain and defies authority and drives the staff up the wall, but is kept anyway because he has more talent than most of the juniors combined.
I need this room, says Ohno, in his soft, lazy voice, eyeing Tackey up and down.
Tackey bolts.
2.
Two weeks later, Ohno turns up again, this time with Machida. Tackey stands to attention and prepares to flee. You don’t have to leave, says Ohno, as Tackey reaches for the door. Just don’t play the music too loud. Tackey nods and dares a little smile.
That day, he sits for two whole hours watching Ohno and Machida dance, enchanted, completely fascinated by the smooth, confident movements that he knows he will never master. When Ohno finally stops, he catches sight of Tackey and blinks as if he’d just remembered Tackey was there. I’ve seen you, he says, You’re cute, you’ll go far, he pronounces with the experience of someone who has seen people come and go. Of course, one whole year seems like a lifetime to Tackey, still red cheeked and full of unlimited enthusiasm. He beams up at Ohno and bows, thank you senpai, he chirps.
3.
The next time they meet is in the huge practice hall. This time, Tackey has grown older, perhaps not physically, but mentally. Tackey has grown to understand that the entertainment industry is not a kind place, not even for fourteen year old boys. Now, Tackey gets to hold the microphone, gets to have even littler boys dancing behind him.
Some things don’t change, though. Next to him, Tsubasa manages that weird looking twirly thing that the chorographer just did. Tackey grits his teeth, and tries too. He fails, naturally and gets sent over to the front where all the good dancers get to sit and watch the rest of the juniors stumble over the hem of too-long pants.
Tackey, right?, comes a voice from above his head. Tackey’s head shoots up, nearly taking out Ohno’s nose. Ohno hasn’t changed. He’s still calm, cool and lazy looking, hair still a golden brownish colour and wearing the same shoes from the last time. Ohno smiles, nose twitching a little. I’m supposed to help you get that bit right. Ohno demonstrates the bit in question and Tackey’s breath catches in his throat. Ohno’s grace hasn’t changed either, smooth and cool like silk.
It takes time, even with Ohno, but Tackey gets it in the end, he’s a Johnny, they all do (if not, they use it to their advantage anyway). Ohno looks satisfied. I knew you’d go far, he tells Tackey as they all gather for a full rehearsal.
Hide, says Tackey softly (and it’s about the third word he’s said). My name, he elaborates shyly, when Ohno goes Eh?
Ohno grins slightly, ok, he says, I guess I’ll see you around then.
Tackey doesn’t see Ohno after that for two years.
4.
There are senpai coming back from Kyoto, say the staff. They’ll be help out with the dance bits for the chibis. Tackey nods and notes it down; new additions always bring chaos if nothing is organized properly. He breaks up a playful scuffle between Ryo and Hina and stops to tidy up Goseki-kun’s huge yellow jacket. Tackey smiles at the little juniors he passes by, reveling in the youthful respect that is almost oozing off their returning grins.
He wonders if Ohno felt that way, with a young, innocent Tackey beaming up at him. But Tackey has learnt not to think about things that can’t be solved. He’s the junior’s leader after all; he can’t spend his time moping over someone who he probably will never see again. With the resolve fresh in his head Tackey heads to the studio.
He stops short of the door; he sees the scuffle of a familiar looking shoe and the swish of very familiar hair. Tackey’s mind fixes the face to the shoes and the hair and that smile. He takes a deep breath, and bolts.
5.
He gets into trouble; of course, seeing that it’s his face that is a large pulling factor for their television audience. But his mind is in a daze; Ohno is back and Tackey isn’t sure what to do. He goes through a normal day of filming with butterflies in his stomach. When it’s time to dance it’s Ohno dancing behind him, eyes focused the way they only focus when he dances.
When it’s all over, Tackey prepares to ease out of the way subtly. Naturally, it’s not so easy when he’s right in the middle and responsible for seeing that the juniors manage to get out of the costumes without too much injury. He’s in the middle of explaining to Jun that no, you’re not allowed to do that during the show, when Ohno wanders over. Ohno waits around till Tackey sends Jun away with Sho and casually steps in the way of Tackey’s bolting path.
So, he says, Hide right?
And Tackey feels this warm bubbling string of warmth fill his chest till it’s almost ready to burst. It’s then, recalling that drama they told him to produce, that he realizes that he has the largest Tokyo-sized crush on Ohno Satoshi. Yeah, he says. Then he pauses, because he’s not sure what to say; it’s not like they’ve actually held any substantial conversation.
It doesn’t seem to faze Ohno much. He ignores the choreographer’s angry looking gesticulating and eyes Tackey up and down. I told you you’ll do well. Macchin wouldn’t believe me, but I told him that people with nice hearts always make it far. And there is a hint of wistfulness in his voice, because he knows that that’s not strictly true. There’s no harm pretending though, and Tackey pretends with him.
I have to go, says Ohno, as the choreographer stops gesticulating and starts walking towards him with what looks like a pointy tap dancing shoe, but Macchin can’t make it for dinner today, so you can come if you want. If there is a hint of apprehension and hopefulness in his voice, Tackey doesn’t hear it over the thumping coming from his chest. Of course I’ll come, he says, feeling like he’s thirteen all over again.

They make a strange pair, walking out of the jimusho together. Ohno is not well known; he’s just another junior, really, no matter how long he’s been around. Tackey gives off an aura, regardless of where he goes. Tackey knows this, and Ohno does too. Tackey is worried, but Ohno just grins and tells him that it doesn’t matter, just be yourself, I like that.
So Tackey is himself, not the character that he’s slowly woven from years behind the camera, but the inner self that he is underneath everything. They go for ramen, because Ohno can’t afford anything else, but insists that he should pay because he’s technically still Tackey’s senpai.
I watched you on Tv, you know, Ohno says when they’re half way through dinner. In Kyoto. Every episode. Tackey slurps down a noodle and looks appropriately bashful. You’ve grown up, ne? You’ll be debuting soon enough, Ohno continues. Tackey just continues eating, not sure how to respond, because it’s true; the higher ups have been considering it since last year.
But we’ll still be friends right? Ohno asks suddenly, fifteen minutes and a whole other random conversation later. He grins when Tackey nods and waves goodbye. So I guess I’ll see you around, he says when they leave.
The next week, Tackey watches him on every single news program, announcing his debut.
7.
When Arashi guests as Music Jump, Tackey ignores the jitters and smiles at Ohno. Congratulations, he says during the break. Ohno sighs and nods back a thank you, I was going to quit, you know, he whispers. Tackey does know, Ohno’s told him before. But he just pats Ohno’s shoulder (it’s amazing how the idol-worship has progressed to some sort of tentative friendship) and tells Ohno that it’s all going to be okay in the end; after all they’re Johnny’s.
Ohno kisses him later, backstage after filming. It’s just a quick peck on the cheek; short and gentle; but Tackey’s face goes fire engine red as he blushes his ears off. Have some dignity, he tells himself as Ohno pulls back and looks at him. It doesn’t work, Tackey feels his crush slowly morphing into something a bit bigger.
So, Ohno says at length, I’ll see you around ne?
Based on past experiences, Tackey doesn’t like the sound of that. He wonders why he feels stuck, an unsettled feeling about what the future will bring; everything is going to change and no matter what he tells himself, Tackey is so, so scared.
8.
Tackey does see Ohno after that, except that it’s never in private. They meet when Arashi guests on MJ and during countdowns and sports days. They meet sometimes, walking down the corridors of the Jimusho, managers crowding around them. Tackey is busy, Ohno is busy and whatever that was started is pushed behind as they try to catch up with the very much adult entertainment world.
When the variety program is announced, Tackey’s heat skips a beat, although he doesn’t show it. Ohno hasn’t changed much ; he’s still long haired and lazy looking. He has a character now, a different one from what everyone is used to, a dazed, dreaming character prone to random acts of idiocy. But Tackey sees underneath it, and Ohno knows; he glances at Tackey briefly and nods. Hi, he mouths, despite the camera rolling. Tackey grins, Hi, he mouths back. They smile at each other, till Taichi notices and pokes Tackey till he focuses again.

Life has a way of not going the way one plans it. It also has a way of passing like a blur, events and mistakes only becoming clear once it’s all over. Years go by, years of fleeting touches and just smiling. Nothing changes, under all the new haircuts and increasingly shiny clothing. Tackey debuts, his work load doubles. And there just isn’t enough time. During the brief moments where he thinks about Ohno, there is only just that much time to regret not doing anything soon enough (before Nino got to him and made the decision to hang onto him forever)
Tackey falls in love too, a different kind of love and he doesn’t regret that. Tsubasa is his best friend, is someone he wants to be with forever. Tackey knows that it’s completely possible to love two people at the same time, although you can mostly only choose one to spend the rest of your life with.
Sometimes, though, he allows himself to think back to going for ramen with Ohno, Ohno’s fingers on his shoulders, teaching him to dance, Ohno’s lips brushing over his cheek, Ohno’s smile that was for him only. Sometimes, he allows himself to wish for more, wish that some things could stay the same (things like teenaged crushes and sweaty dance rehearsals that end with miso ramen)
10.
Tackey supposes that he’s pretty old. He’s seen everything, done everything. He’s focused, determined and a natural leader. He’s grown better at dancing, better at singing. He’s all grown up. When Enbujou ’06 opens, he performs with all his might. Perhaps, he thinks, riding on the exhilaration of the applause , he’s found another place to show the world who he really is.
On DVD filming night, Ohno and Aiba show up. No matter how grown up he is, Tackey’s heart still skips.
When he’s suspended over the audience, his eyes run over the people sitting on the second row, searching, searching. He finds Ohno’s eyes, watching him, a slow, steady smile in place. That’s one thing that hasn’t changed much, really, Tackey thinks as Ohno mouths a Told you so.
It falls into place, almost instantly, hanging there and watching Ohno. Ohno was, is, one of the special people in his life that will always remain, one of the special people who have shaped him and made him who he is today. Sometimes, it’s essential to be able to understand that there’s a special place for everyone.
11.
Backstage, Ohno and Tackey look at each other as juniors bustle by and staff run around shouting stuff at each other. I missed you, Hide-kun Ohno says with a slow half smile, it’s been too long, hasn’t it? (And it’s not a question).
I missed you too, says Tackey. Then they both pause, because there isn’t much they can say. They’ve led their own lives, completely uninvolved with the other. They’ve changed outside; some parts for the better, some parts for the worse. But Ohno is there, Tackey can see him just being there, and he knows that it’s going to be alright.
12.
No one knows it; their little friendship and maybe more. After all, there never was a need to let everyone know. It’s something for them only. Tackey watches as Arashi gains momentum, watches as Ohno let’s his insides come out even more. He watches himself too, as he learns new things, as he shapes himself and remembers Ohno reminder to just be himself. And from that, Tackey grows.
It’s the little things, the small memories from the days gone by that have shaped him. When he goes back, seeing through his adult eyes the tears and the smiles and the young, innocent crushes, Tackey can laugh, perhaps send Ohno a mail with a picture of a ramen bowl and truly be glad.
During the countdown, Ohno looks at the satellite camera as he announces Tackey and Tsubasa. Tackey looks back, I’ll see you around, he mouths and Ohno grins. They’ve both realized that it’s enough.
And then it's the revolutionary age...
Don't throw away your sad dreams and tears.
Just gently pack them all into the little box of youth
From time to time when you open that box,
your beautiful memories will come back to life

I swear this is possible 8D
After all, Arashi has mentioned multiple times how Leader used to have the whole cool rebel image going on during their junior days XD
And Lader was around like, a year before Tackey was and he's two years older. So that just got me started. Takizawa Kakumei isn't exactly helping, neither is my newly arrived Enbujou 08 dvd, Well, idk. This shlll be the last fic for a while, goooddbyyeee fandom.
Fic list is
here, by the way. Feel free to check it out, mostly because I've just tidied it up and want to use it before I neglect it again
