Title: Seven days to heaven
Pairing: Ohno/Nino
Rating: Pg
Summary: Seven more days, is what the doctor said to two young men. Seven days to fall in love, meetings, fishing and lazy mornings; are you sure you can leave without a care? AU
A/n: I know I’ve essentially ignored the painful physical details completely and parts of this may not make sense, but hey, I put Nino on a boat. Also, I was listening to this and this on repeat while writing; it’s not necessary to listen to them, but I thought it might go well with the story.

1.

The doctor tells him that he has a week more to live. His mother cries, Ohno cries too, even though he doesn’t see the point.  Ohno spends the first day with his family, sitting around their living room table and unpacking memories they’ve shared till now.  Ohno finds that maybe it’s worth dying, he has all those precious times stored up and he doesn’t have a single regret.  Ohno figures that it’s okay.

He decides to head off to the sea, he hasn’t had much time and he hasn’t caught anything other than blackfish so far. He hugs his mother and father and packs his bags; seven shirts, seven pairs of shorts, seven pairs of socks and seven pairs of neatly folded underwear. Ohno puts on his hat and leaves his medicine on the shelf over his bed, then he walks out the door; time for one last memory.

2.

Nino spent the first of his last seven days curled up on the sofa immersed in games. On the second day, Sho arrives with a sobbing Aiba in tow and forces him out of what he calls a hell hole and sends him off to the sea side. Nino hates the sea, he hates the sand and the sun and the noisy beach goers. To prolong his agony, Sho had even confiscated his DS, Nino wishes he would just hurry up and die already. He wonders if there are wii consoles in heaven.

Nino is moping around in the hotel lobby with the Tetris game he’d talked a little boy into lending him when Ohno comes back from his first day out at sea. He’s dripping wet and leaving a trail of puddles as he ambles in, fishing rod in hand. Ohno smiles at the receptionist and at the bell boy who comes to take his fishing gear. He smiles at the little boy Nino took the Tetris from and then he smiles at Nino.

Nino smiles back.

3.

Other than the sea and most outdoor activity, Nino also dislikes drinking. Ohno, on the other hand enjoys it a great deal. Nino sits next to Ohno and watches him down glass after glass. Kaa-chan never lets me drink so much because the doctor said not too, he tells Nino and the whole bar, but I guess it doesn’t matter when I’m going to die; he finishes his tequila and orders a ginger beer. Nino looks at Ohno and wonders why he’s in a bar with a man he’d just met and why, having realised that he has no good reason to be there, he hasn’t left yet.

Ohno grins at Nino and offers a sip of his ginger beer. Nino declines, shaking his head slightly, I’m not allowed to drink, he says (even though it’s not strictly true because Sho doesn’t count as medical authority.) You too? Ohno asks, still tipsy. Yeah, I’m going to die next week. Nino tells Ohno, clutching at his glass of water. Nino isn’t quite sure why there’s a feeling of unrest that stirs within him. He’s told himself that there isn’t anything for him to do on earth anyway; lying in a hospital room isn’t very fulfilling. But somehow, he wonders if maybe things would be different if he had more than seven days left.

They find out that they share the same disease and the same doctor and that their common points stop at that. It’s strange; Nino can barely stand to talk to his own friends for prolonged periods of time, but somehow there click in an inexplicable way. Perhaps they’re drawn together by their identical circumstances and the inevitable that will happen all too soon. Whatever it is largely through the influence of alcohol, Nino and Ohno become, by the end of the night, friends.

4.

On the fourth day, Ohno manages to get Nino to go fishing with him. Nino spends a total amount of five seconds on deck after they set out before retreating to the cabin, face green and promising murder and suffering to Ohno once the world stopped spinning. Ohno catches a whole array of brightly coloured fish that he brings to the cabin to show Nino. He then bustles into Nino’s personal space, sketch book in hand and begins to draw every single one of them.

Nino watches, his desire to puke recedes as he watches Ohno’s fingers slide across the paper, not missing a single detail. Nino cuddles into Ohno’s shoulder and peers at the bright yellow fish Ohno is colouring in carefully. The boat rocks precariously and Nino’s need to throw up his breakfast reappears. He does just that; all over the pretty yellow fish.

Ohno doesn’t get angry, he grins at Nino and makes a joke about fish and vomit that Nino doesn’t quite understand; he’s too busy with the sudden realisation that he might be in love with the man. When they reach the dock, Ohno helps Nino off the boat and deposits him back in his hotel room after extracting from him a promise to have dinner together that night. Nino sits on his bed and buries his head in the pillows, feeling the need to throw up all over again but for a rather different reason.

When Ohno comes to get him, Nino is changed and back to his usual self, they walk together , shoulders bumping and Nino feels like his heart is going to jump out of his chest. He supposes they have been walking like that since they met but he’s somehow more conscious of it; conscious of the warm body next to him.

Nino eats like a bird, or maybe even less. Ohno eats everything given to him and what Nino doesn’t finish. Nino secretly thinks they’d go well together and perhaps save money as well. Then he remembers that there is no more time in which they can go well together. It hits him just then that he’s going to die, and that, for the first time in a long while, he doesn’t want to go yet.

5.

On the fifth day, Ohno stays with Nino in his hotel room while they chat about life thus far. Nino snuggles up under the covers; Ohno sits on the carpet, pencil in hand. Ohno looks at Nino, comfortably absorbed in the yet to be returned Tetris game. It’s strangely familiar and safe and Ohno feels more at home than he ever has before.

He could build up a home with Nino, Ohno realises, he wants to build up a home with Nino. He wants to spend lazy days with him, sitting and talking and relaxing in comfortable silence. Ohno thinks about this with a small smile on his face. He thinks about it before he remembers that he can’t, they can’t. It comes as a cold shock that Ohno feels from head to toe. He’d never had a reason to want to further stay on earth, no mission, and no definite dream. Now he does, something he’d found one week before he was supposed to die.

Ohno finds that he doesn’t want to die anymore, and if he does, he would do so with all the regrets in the world.  He finds that the memories he already has aren’t enough, he wants to continue making them together with Nino. Something claws at his throat as he stares at Nino. Nino looks up, smiles a small shy smile and Ohno knows that he’d never known anyone like Ninomiya Kazunari.

It’s cold at night; Nino lets Ohno climb in beside him, under the warmth of the covers. Ohno inches closer until their fingers brush. Neither one makes any move to remove them. Ohno is pretty sure the warmth that spreads through his body, no matter how short term it will be, is not entirely from the thick comforter.

6.

It’s tomorrow, Nino says quietly, the next morning as they lie together on the bed watching the sunrise. We’re going to die tomorrow, he says again when Ohno doesn’t respond. Ohno shuts his eyes and tries to will things to be different. Maybe if there was a cure , maybe if the doctors found a way to help them live a little longer, maybe-

I don’t want to die Nino says, even softer when the silence fills the room like a thick poisonous gas. Ohno squeezes his eyes even tighter and pulls Nino towards him, I don’t want to die too, he whispers.  They spend the morning in silence, reflecting, wishing and hoping for something that they know won’t come true.

Ohno kisses Nino when Nino cups his hands around his face and blows to keep them warm. Nino kisses back, loves him back. At that moment, Ohno realises that it’s all he needs. Nino’s tongue peeps out and swipes over Ohno’s lower lip playfully, Ohno kisses his nose gently and tugs him closer, burying his face in Nino’s hair. Nino’s hair smells of the ocean breeze and the hotel’s almond scented shampoo. Nino’s hair smells of life and of joy, Ohno inhales deeply, imprinting that scent deep inside his heart so it will stay there forever.

It’s sad, it’s painful and it hurts far more than the initial thought of death itself. It’s unfair, Nino thinks to himself, it’s unfair that they have so little time. But it’s sweet at the same time, refreshing and empowering all at once. Nino thinks a little harder and looks a little deeper and is able to tell himself with a smile that he’s glad to have fallen in love with Ohno Satoshi.

7.

On the last day, they go take pictures together with the vast expanse of sea as their backdrop. They splash about in the water, build sandcastles and collect pretty seashells. Nino giggles as Ohno pecks him on the cheek and flicks a pebble at him. Ohno pouts, Nino kisses it away. Ohno falls even more in love, Nino loves him back.

Ohno and Nino go back to Tokyo together, they find their doctor and tell him that they’re together and plan to be together until it ends. Matsumoto Jun scratches his head and marvels at the odds and for the millionth time wonders why he has to put up with idiot patients. He sighs and arranges a private room for them anyway; he has a secret soft spot for the both of them, despite refusing to admit it. This soft spot, however, doesn’t stop from reminding them how annoyingly clichéd the whole damn thing is and stop being such drama queens.

Sho and Aiba show up. Aiba cries, Sho pretends not to. Nino and Ohno look at each other and smile.

They lie down together, just like they had in Nino’s hotel room, still in love. I’m glad, Nino says, I’m glad I found you Oh-chan. Ohno’s fingers lace with his, fitting together perfectly. I’d never thought I’d know what it’s like to love someone like this, Nino continues, giving Ohno’s hand a little squeeze. The room is quiet, but there’s a different kind of silence that fills the air. It engulfs the room, filling them with the quiet confidence that can only come from love.

Ohno’s thumb strokes the bit of skin under Nino’s knuckle and hums softly. Nino closes his eyes and relaxes, he dreams of lying on the beach with Ohno, laughing and playing. He sees Ohno’s long, beautiful fingers, sliding fluidly across clean white paper. His smile grows larger, his grip on Ohno’s hand doesn’t loosen.

Nino’s nails rake the back of Ohno’s hand gently, calmly, full of tenderness conveyed by the simplest of touches. Ohno’s eyes fall shut too, the room giving way to images of Nino’s smile when they first met, Nino’s greenish face on the boat and the sparkle in his eyes as they splashed in the sea. Ohno knows that he has no more regrets now; his heart is full to overflowing the short memories taking up so much because it’s Nino, just Nino and Ohno wouldn’t have it any other way.

-1.

At 7.53 pm, Ninomiya Kazunari stops breathing. At 7.54pm, Ohno Satoshi kisses Nino’s cheek lightly and shuts his eyes. Under the covers, two hands remain entwined, along with two young hearts, brimming with the love they shared.

-2.

When Ohno opens his eyes, he sees a face slowly coming into focus. He sees a smile, familiar and glowing. Nino holds out his hand and chirps with a large amount of glee, I knew there were Wii consoles in heaven!
