i see where you're coming from. all of what the fans see is a projected image, no matter who the artist is. and when you really stop and think about that it's hard to feel connected to the music (and the community) at all.
on the other hand, i think the very act of creating something makes it more genuine than having your label buy a song from a so-called "hitmaker" and shoving it in your mouth.
some of those bands that project an image to "start a fad" i have nothing but respect for. Thursday really took the title and genre of "screamo" onto the mainstage, and I still consider Full Collapse to be one of the most impressive albums released in my lifetime. Plain White T's may have recorded "Hey There Delilah" specifically to hit radios, but the song comes from the heart and relates to the songwriter.
I'm sure we both distrust bands that project an image that's gaining popularity to become famous. the most blatant example is sugar ray when they abruptly switched genres with "Fly" to ride the coattails of the 311/Sublime/RHCP popularity. An Angle rode the Bright Eyes formula into a Drive-Thru bid. That behavior is the really lame stuff that gets my goat.
