right now brian reale should be in madison, waiting anxiously awaiting the start of the nana grizol show. i'm sure it will be a great show with delicious pizza. unfortuntely, brian is a heretic and a witch and has transported himself to the green mountain state because he is a sick, sick man. boo.
The Get Up Kids was an exceptional show. I met some buds up there (corey easterbrook from jack fendey) and planned to crash on their hotel room after a long night of rocking out. The openers were a great kansas band called Mansions. Think 90s frontman-driven emo. We talked for a while with them about getting the phone call to be on this tguk reunion tour. the drummer said it was actually a text message that said "playing with get up kids" and he couldn't figure out what it meant. like, perhaps it was sent five years ago when tguk was still touring. Anyway, really good stuff.
Kevin Devine played next. I considered him a pretty-boy ted leo/oberst knock-off already, so I didn't really go into the set with an open mind. it was pretty lackluster and he talked about brooklyn a lot.
THEN CAME THE GET UP KIDS. ***THE*** GET UP KIDS. I made it to the second row, but on Jim Suptic's side. Initially this peeved me a little; if I couldn't be right in front of Matt Pryor, then James Dewees is the obvious second choice. I could've plugged my ears and pretended I was at a Reggie and the Full Effect show.
My worry was premature. Jim Suptic put on a great show. He performed his songs and parts with just slightly less enthusiasm than Ryan Pope. Ryan just looked like he was having a hell of a time rockin' the drums. James, on the other hand, seemed like a burnout. In old footage (the clips that came with the re-release dvd!) he would shout and dance and play behind back and improvise, on saturday he just muddled around with different keys and was turned down very low. but hey, 'twas still fun to see him in person.
P to the S, Rob Pope is an AMAZING bass player. The only downside to that was during Walking on a Wire, when Matt sang "System failing," he would straddle the monitor and play on the pickup, which made a god-awful noise that sounded like everyone removing their patch cords at 10,000 dBels. It plays into his avante-garde wheelhouse, which is documented by his iffy side-projects (read: White Whale.) James frowned even harder when Rob did it.
ummm...i got a sweet hoodie. and a Mansions cassette. yup.
oh so after the show I realized I'd left my epilepsy meds in naples, so I really couldn't justify sticking around all night, as much fun as that might've been. So I said my adieus, and, after a near catastrophe involving my car keys, I started back.
About an hour later, My friend Chris sent me this text: "Beer with the Get Up Kids." I made a noise similar to Rob's bass. I couldn't justify sticking it out the whole night, and I certainly couldn't justify turning around at midnight and heading back. I have to drive to california the beginning of the year, and getting my license yanked would put a serious kibosh on those plans. to add insult to injury, they all went to the aquarium the next morning.
This ends The Get Up Kids update, now onto a general life post.
NOTE: "general life post" will go up tomorrow. it will involve the holidays, work, california, the nfl, and the onset of college bball.
