Literally.
Yesterday morning, some workers came to fix something in our building. To that end, they shut off the air vents which draw the air from the bathrooms, for a day. These exhausts are normally responsible for a relatively high level of constant white noise.
Now, suddenly, the bathrooms were utterly silent. I could even hear the clock in mine tick.
It surprised me how unsettling this change felt - how self-conscious an affair it made just being in the bathroom (whether to go to the toilet, to shower, or just to wash my hands) when you can suddenly hear every splash of a water drop, every rustle of a towel, every shuffling of feet. An odd experience.
