He was trying to get up, to follow the young man who was slowly walking off into the blackness and laughing quietly. But it was no use. The pain that now coursed throughout his entire body was becoming more intense with each second, until he felt like he could die right then and there. He dropped his head to the floor-- at least what he assumed was the floor, since everything seemed to be black all around-- the coolness there soothing his hot forehead. He closed his eyes and began to breathe deeply. The cold seemed to spread from his face to the rest of his body, until the pain was nearly gone. At the same time, his surroundings became brighter and brighter. Without warning the floor gave way, allowing him to tumble only a short distance before he hit another hard surface ( ... )

Throne winced sympathetically, forcing half of his face to pucker as he watched the new hatchling fall forward onto the floor and utter a small streams of what sounded like "ow"s before blinking up and around at his surroundings. "Sorry about that," Throne said apologetically, squatting down a little ways behind him and peering with him at what was left of the torn cocoon from over the new arrival's shoulder. "Somebody didn't really think of the logistics when they decided to stack these babies up on shelves." Throne looked at the guy with an expression that said sorry about that. He was probably Throne's age, give or take -- and with a small nudge with the side of his wrist to a goopy shoulder he offered the new guy a folded up towel for him to clean himself off with ( ... )

He started a little when someone, somewhere behind him, began to speak. When he turned around to face whoever it was, he was greeted by a young blond guy. He was beginning to sense a pattern it what was going one... Fall, meet a blond guy, fall again, meet another blond guy. He was kind of hoping it wouldn't repeat after this ( ... )

Throne's smile flickered down into a frown for a moment and then back up again before growing wider, slightly more genuine as it settled onto his face. Nobody, no hatchling he'd ever greeted or seen greeted or had ever heard about before had ever actually done this -- dropped into a brand new world, only to ask their guide if they were okay. He figured that if the new arrival -- whatever he'd be named -- could tell, that he probably looked pretty damn sad, which wasn't a good sign. Shaking his head, Throne gave a small laugh which was quiet and private. "I'm fine," he said and nodded once, "it's just life being like life, I guess," and shrugged, looking back down at the hand that he offered to the guy. "I figure, soon enough, you'll learn all about it so let's not start off your birthday on such a low note, yeah ( ... )

"A couple more...?" He scratched the back of his head in confusion. He didn't really get what the other guy was saying, but he looked way happier now than he did before, so it didn't really matter. All this stuff about memory crystals and dreams could wait ( ... )

"....whatOne moment Throne was smiling, more clearly than he had in a very long time as he watched the new arrival try to parse through his thoughts with a preciously curious expression on his face, and then the next minute, Throne's smile was gone, his entire face contracted in a disoriented and bewildered 'huh?' as he blinked at the young man standing in front of him. He thought, for a moment, that it was a simple mishear -- the auditory equivalent of a trick of the light. Like something in his subconscious was still so preoccupied with Fullmetal's death that, when finally given the opportunity, it had slipped in a suggestion of its own just at the wrong moment. "Where did you..." and Throne stopped himself, leaning forward, peering into the guy's face, trying to rectify what Fullmetal meant to him and the fact that this new guy -- for some strange reason -- would want a name like that ( ... )

Fullmetal took a step back as the other young man went from smiling to... something. He couldn't tell exactly what the expression meant, but something in his bearing had changed radically in those few seconds. If Fullmetal had been confused about what was going on before, he was ten times more confused now ( ... )

Throne shook his head when the guy -- Fullmetal, he repeated to himself -- said 'sorry'. Immediately both of his hands squeezed reflexively, giving him the gentlest of shakes as he blurted out, without even thinking, "No, don't say sorry, no." A flurry of emotions passed over his face: first concern and then relief and then something deeper, not entirely like sadness or maybe regret as Throne realized that this Fullmetal wasn't really his Fullmetal -- even if there was the certain possibility of overlap. And that misalignment meant that something would be lost in the process -- perhaps something so much more than what he had lost when he had died ( ... )
