Above strode through Section Four, ignoring the looks. They were more casual than they'd used to be - she'd been here nearly a year, after all - but she didn't come through the housing sections often, and without giant shapeshifting dragons around, she really was the biggest person here.

He was supposed to be... in this one. Above stooped her long head down, picked up a pebble in the tip of her beak, and used it to knock. Knocking with her beak itself tended to hurt a little.

Simon saw Above coming before she knocked- he'd been sitting in the living area when Gabriel spotted her, screeched with alarm, and dove under the couch. He heaved a small sigh; he was feeling a little more like himself after his first two visitors, but still not quite. He knew he was fortunate to have so many checking on him, though, even if he wasn't up to it.

Fixing a smile on his face, Simon limped to the door and opened it.

"Hello, Above. I'd invite you in, but... well, can you fit through the door?"

She tossed the pebble aside with a flick of her head, lowering it to look through the door with one big red eye. < Nope. I'm not here for long, anyway, > she said, keeping her tone light. She'd eaten about an hour before coming here, knowing that would keep her mood higher than otherwise. No one had to know how she felt. She could handle it.

It also had the effect she wasn't aware of, that of making her smell fairly strongly of fish.

Simon caught a whiff of fish and couldn't help but chuckle, despite how badly he still felt.

"You just had dinner, I take it. ... I'm glad that you are okay, too." He reached out and gently patted her beak. "Did any of those creatures hurt you?"

She pulled back a little, but did let him touch it. Above hated this part - this public property thing, people deciding they could touch her just whenever they shared space. If she'd let anyone do it without comment, she supposed, it would be Simon and probably Krile, too.

Now the lightness in her voice fell a little flat. < They tried their best, but I'm fine. >

"Sorry," Simon said at once, swallowing and withdrawing his hand when he saw her pull away. "I didn't..." He cleared his throat. "But you're okay- that's the important part."

Simon thought she seemed unusually quiet, but then again, so was he. He would let her speak about it in due time, if there was anything wrong aside from understandable fatigue- and if she chose to share at all.

"As am I. In spite of everything."

< Mmm, well, that's what I get for choosing to be a Quetzalcoatlus. People just can't keep their hands off me. > ...okay, she had to admit, even to herself that just sounded bitter. Above shook her head. The side-to-side motion barely moved her head at the place where it joined her neck, but her face was so long that the gesture made the tip of her beak travel through blurred arcs. < Forget it. >

The breath left her nostrils, not quite short or forceful enough to be a sigh. < That's good, anyway. >

"Well... that and it's hard to offer any other gestures of comfort aside from words," Simon said, his smile turning a little twisted. Something was definitely wrong, then- but she didn't seem ready to open up about it yet. "Still, I'll be more careful if it makes you uncomfortable."

He then nodded.

"And it means a lot. After what we went through, I am amazed there weren't any more casualties." Especially not because of me.

Even more bitter words rose up - not in her throat, she didn't talk that way anymore - but Above forced them back down. She really didn't want to get into a shouting match. < Yeah. >

< It seemed pretty messy. > She swung her head over to use her beak tips to nibble through the not-hair on her heavy shoulder. The skin beneath - no thicker or harder than the skin in the little web between a human's thumb and forefinger - seemed to itch more, lately, though she knew it was all in her mind. Simon. Right. She'd come here to talk to and think about him, not that again. < A bunch of people and monsters in that cave network. Must have been hairy. >

As usual when he was nervous, one of Simon's fingers went into his mouth, and he bit down on it. He wanted to ask Above what the matter was, but she seemed stubbornly resisting even mentioning that she wasn't feeling like herself- and selfishly, Simon wasn't sure he was in much of a mental state to lend his support.

"It wasn't much on our end, aside from the monsters carrying me there after I was tied up... not like I remember that, of course, because I passed out as soon as we got to the burning forest. Brianna, Juhani, Bellflower, Castle and Lyle had quite a fight on their hands coming to save us, though."

She forced her beak away from her shoulder and clicked it shut.

< Man, what's this place coming to. > It didn't sound like a question. < The monsters haven't disappeared, you know. They're still around. Fewer of them are alive, but they're around. >

"So I've heard," said Simon, biting his lip. "Reality seems to be falling apart even faster than before. I wonder... I mean, I have always felt like staying or going should be a choice. And we might not be able to stay any longer, if this keeps up..."

Above moved her head and neck through the gesture that served as a shrug. < Guess it's all coming to a head, > she said soberly. She couldn't really bring herself to feel strongly about that. It was all over for her anyway.

Reaching down, she tried to nudge the side of her beak against Simon's shoulder. < I hope you make it, whatever happens. And your sister. >

The gesture startled Simon, and he gave Above a tiny smile. While he appreciated the words, he was unable to bring himself to tell her that he was getting more and more sure that there was nothing left for him back home, no matter how often he reminded himself that they never had the whole picture.

"You, too," he said instead. "I think all of us have earned our happy ending after everything we've been through here."
