Wellspring, early afternoon? wayofflowers August 25 2011, 19:59:49 UTC
The break room in the clinic was perfectly sufficient for relaxing and conversation with her co-workers, but with the summer warmth, Bellflower found in relaxing to retreat to the peace and quiet of the gardens behind the building. It was particularly interesting, now that she had seen her own gardens, to pick out what was the same and what was different.

Today, however, it seemed like she wasn't alone. The woman from the Adventurers' office - Amber. Bellflower gave her a small wave. "Good afternoon."

Amber was simply passing through on her way to the southern reaches of the island, where all manner of flora flourished wild. The gardens attracted her curiosity, but they were tended and owned by someone, and so she would take her herb-gathering elsewhere. She had paused to admire a plant, never the less, when Bellflower's voice made her turn her head.

She gathered her skirts, stepped carefully around a flowerbed, and bowed her head in a polite greeting. "Good afternoon. How does the day find you? And while it is on my mind--are these gardens used by the healers? Their location suggests so, at least."

Bellflower gave the other woman a bow of her head in response, and a warm smile. It was good to meet Amber again under slightly less trying circumstances.

"Well, and I hope the same for you. And yes, we use these herbs in our healing."

While Amber was well aware that all manner of things were brought from the Wildernesses for the residents' use, she found it reassuring to learn that the Clinic also cultivated its own stores of medicine. She nodded, smiling her quiet approval.

"Then it is good I heeded my thought not to come picking through them," she said, not without humour. "Fear not--I shan't. There's plenty of wild plants to satisfy my curiosity in the woods."

She paused before the next question, but perhaps it wouldn't be overly forward to indulge her curiosity about this, too. "Only some share your extraordinary skill in the healing arts, then?"

Bellflower's smile turned up a little, clearly amused. "I doubt any trouble would have come of taking some - we do have a great deal." She settled the cup of tea she'd brought outside with her on her lap.

"And no, not all of the medics can heal as I do - but all are skilled, in their own ways."

She didn't think she had stepped foot inside the Clinic building in the entirety of her stay in the Sphere. She had remained healthy and had no reason to enter, but now it did pique her curiosity. The worlds the residents hailed from were myriad and diverse; were their healing arts similarly varied?

"You mentioned it was a... magical ability." The pause before the word was pointed, but not due to hesitation: the word made something in her head ring like a well-made glass bowl when struck. "And that others in your world had similar abilities. Do you perhaps know if it's something inherent, or something that may be learned?"

Bellflower hummed thoughtfully to herself for amoment, and then answered. "It is... something of both. The power is inherent - something drawn from within ourselves, that not everyone has. But to be able to use it at all - for healing or for fighting - requires training." And then there were those like Kagerou - but Bellflower had never particularly questioned the girl's power, save that it was different from her own.

"Healing or fighting," she repeated, feeling something crawl in the back of her mind, scrabbling fiercely in the fog that clouded her memory. Something about this was vitally important.

"I beg your pardon. I didn't mean to be so... distracted. Our worlds are clearly dissimilar, so I am grasping at straws, but at this point I have little else." It was a more frank statement than she was wont to make; frustration rippled under her even tone for a moment.

"Perhaps... your world has a similar power, even if little else is the same." It was something of an educated guess, but she knew there were other forms of power in the Sphere, other than reiatsu. "Those from mine are not the only ones to be gifted like this."

"Yes. The notion is not entirely new to me. But I do stay rather close to the office when it comes to Adventurer business." Amber smiled slightly. "Thus, I don't often get the chance to witness the fighters in our ranks show their skills. It was... very different, watching you heal her. Perhaps more real, in a sense."

"Hmm." Bellflower tapped a finger on her lips as she thought. "If you have nobody else from your world here, it might be difficult to learn about such things. There are many others from mine here, and they taught me much. But perhaps... if you wished, you could probably come by the clinic when things are not too busy. Steady hands are just as welcomed as magical gifts."

The offer gave her pause. She was already working in two places and quite content in both, yet there was something indefinably right about the idea of helping to heal the sick and the wounded.

"I will remember your words," Amber said, nodding her head in a show of gratitude. "I've had to learn the plants of this world all over again, but I do believe I had some skills in herb lore and perhaps even healing with them."

Bellflower smiled. "A talent like that would be welcomed - we have many healers, but fewer who know plant lore." She was one of them herself, but it was a less common talent, it seemed. "There are a few books in the collection here that deal with such matters."

That seemed somewhat curious to Amber; after all, magical healing was a talent possessed only by a few, but at least in theory, anyone could learn the basics of healing with herbs. Developing either skill would be time-consuming, however, so perhaps the brevity of many sojourns in the Sphere was to blame for a lack of learning opportunities.

"Yet you possess a medical library? Of course you would. The general abundance of books here--I used to find it very peculiar. But this is a thriving community. Perhaps it shouldn't surprise me so much."

"When a Wilderness comes with books, I think people tend to take a great deal - they are a way of regaining lost knowledge and skills. And entertainment too, I suppose." She did not read much for pleasure herself, though she spent a fair bit of time with the medical books. Some held familiar knowledge, and others did not.

"And what about the books that speak of things some here hardly understand?" Amber's eyes twinkled as she spoke, even though layered in that was often real frustration that there seemed to be such a wealth of knowledge contained in Edensphere that was utterly beyond her ken.

"I do not mean that these things are impossible fictions. I've seen manuals of medicine, a time or two, that I could hardly read, for all that the language seemed familiar."
