What was strange was how quickly they popped up. He'd only just been through this street, shopping for vegetables, and now there were more. "An apple a day keeps the doctor away?" Really? Neither kind of apple seemed that useful, though more memories perhaps made a doctor more required. There was no telling what would happen if one was to learn everything about their past. Had anyone ever achieved that? It was another thing to add to the list of things he was pondering.

Idly he touched the writing of one of the newer slogans. The paint wasn't even wet. Shouldn't there be some form of dampness?

The man in black was rushing by when he spotted Gai touching the graffiti. Was he responsible for this mess?! ...No, he had no spray can. Curses.

The man looked strangely familiar to Fugue. Had they met before? He was always forgetting names too busy to remember all the people he met. He was an important, busy man after all.

"Careful not to get yourself dirty," he called out to Gai as he walked by.

He knew that voice. And the body shape was familiar enough, even if the pants were darker than usual and the eyes were hidden. "I shall, Fugue." Was saying the name dangerous? Maybe. But likely not. "Have you seen much of this?" Gai doubted that Fugue was responsible. It didn't seem dangerous or background. If anything, he would blame Mother.

Gai took a few steps closer to Fugue, a friendly expression on his face. "It has been some time since I have seen you! You have been well?" Not killed again? Yet? He wished he had some inclination of how dangerous Fugue was, but he just didn't know.

This person knew his name. That meant they knew each other in some way...maybe from before he was reborn into Edensphere? His mind was too distracted to recall how he knew this man. He simply played it off.

"Ah...yes. Yes it has been a while!" Whoever you are. "I was under the weather for a while, unfortunately. I'm much better now though, thank you for asking." There was no point in bringing up the migraines that continued to plague him. He was fine most of the time.

"How about yourself?"

Gai watched Fugue. Under the weather? That meant... sick, right? "I am sorry that you were ill." He hoped that was what it meant. Otherwise he'd wind up being confusing again. "You have not written in some time either, and I was beginning to wonder if something might have happened." Not really. He didn't think the raven, or crow, or whatever it was, would go after Fugue. Fugue didn't seem to give much in the way of information, and didn't seem to have much left to give, even.

"I have been well, though a few days ago I could not have said as much. Or recognized you. I am better now as well!" Fugue had seemed to be hurrying, before. "You are busy?"

Fugue waved off the concern. "I am doing much better, I assure you." He paused as he thought about it. "I suppose I haven't written much. I've been distracted I suppose." Was his absence really noticeable?

Wait of course it was. He was an important person after all. (Still it was heartwarming to think that someone noticed.)

Fugue's response to Gai was a bit kinder now. "What happened a few days ago?" Apparently he was completely behind the times. "Yes quite busy getting rid of that." He pointed to the tagged wall.

"Splendid. That is very good to hear, that you are better. And I do not blame you for being distracted. Sometimes things get very distracting around here, and it does not take being here long to notice that!" That was worrying. What had Fugue been distracted by? Was something else going on? Was something coming? It wasn't hard to see that the Wilderness kept winding up grey.

...Fugue didn't know? Gai could add that as evidence to what he already believed. "A few of us forgot everything we had learned about ourselves and others for a few days. We only had what we were born with. It was very... distracting." Gai's gaze followed Fugue's finger point, even though he knew what was being gestured to. "So you are against that, then." And since it kept happening, it might be beyond his control, like many things.

the wilderness is actually white ^_^ fugue_angel May 16 2011, 00:34:03 UTC
The memory loss? Was news to him. "That sounds quite frightening. But you said it only lasted a few days? That is quite strange but at least it wasn't a permanent change?"

He nodded grimly. "That could be anything from random mischief to codes from those who would bring chaos to our community. I don't like it and I want it gone as quickly as possible."

"I agree. I am glad I remember my friends and acquaintances again! It was stressful, but we hoped it was temporary and it passed." So Fugue didn't read the journals much, or he hadn't for a time. Well. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to ask. "What have you been up to aside from recovering?"

Gai nodded in agreement. "I do not think it is codes. It is the same nonsense repeated over and over. But it would be nice if it was gone." Although. While it was up. Maybe it could be useful. Maybe a few codes and things actually could be added to the walls, to see if it would open any eyes.

"Yes it is fortunate that it turned out the way it did." The comment was more polite than anything else. "Hmm? Oh. I've been reading and catching up on things. Paperwork. Not that interesting."

Of course it was a code. Why else would some of the words strike people as familiar? Fugue inwardly scowled but kept a neutral expression on his face. "You never know. Don't weird things always happen in Edensphere? Things are always more than they seem." He stroked his chin. "Did any of the words seem familiar to you? I've heard more than few people mention a strange deja vu."

"Oh. Paperwork is not fun. I am not sure why there is always more to be done. But what do you do paperwork for?" Gai didn't really expect an answer, and really that wasn't the smartest question to ask ever. But he didn't get chances to run into Fugue often, and so a little bit of a wager could be taken.

"I have not seen anything except the strange face that look familiar. None of the phrases are... No, there is one phrase that seemed strange that I saw in the Yard. Believe it. It makes little sense, because what would you believe? But there is something about it that makes me wonder if I have heard it before." Gai shrugged. "What of you? Are there any that remind you of anything?"

The question threw him for a minute. "Paperwork for...the hatchery of course. Guards..you know. Important stuff."

"Believe it?" That ...did sound familiar. In a way. It made Fugue uncomfortable to think about it, like he was on the verge of a headache. "That does sound--it must be a popular saying." He didn't want to think about it. At all.

The wind shifted slightly as the two spoke. It gusted up an swirled dirt around their feet in a peculiar way.

The Hatchery and Guards. Not what Gai had expected, but then again, he really hadn't expected an answer that would tell him something. Fugue was not someone Gai had ever gotten information from. "Of course. Those are both important things! And speaking of what you do, I have not thanked you for helping with the Watch house." Whether Fugue was helpful or not, Gai could still be polite.

He glanced around as the wind swirled, curious, but saw nothing else. "Perhaps it is! There is no way to know yet. But as everything likely has a meaning to someone, therefore that may have meaning to some people here. Even if we do not know why. Though that means the other strange things, like '867-5309' has meaning. But of course it might! Many words are very different!"

The more Gai spoke about the graffiti having meaning to people, the harder the wind became, picking up dust like a tiny twister.

Fugue however seemed obvious, although his face was rather blank.

"Meaning to the ones communicating through it maybe." He was fixated. "A numerical code? It has no place here. Speaking in riddles is for cowards."

Gai noted the stronger wind and decided that maybe the topic choice wasn't the best ever. He could ponder it in private. Instead he would talk more casually with Fugue. He'd seen the other man a few times and still didn't know much about him.

"There are a lot of riddles here though! They come up very often. I think that maybe they are fun to ponder, but I am not very good at them. I am not even good at metaphors. Why do you not like riddles, though? Are you bad at them as well?" Maybe Gai was downplaying his abilities just a bit, but it seemed like the smart and safe thing to do.

The wind seemed to calm at the subject change, shifting into a milder breeze.

"Of course I'm good at riddles!" He didn't want to sound like he was a fool. "But these riddles must be particularly crafty. If they seem simple, then we are fooled."

Yes that sounded intelligent. It was true too. "The Exile is trickier than... His voice trailed off as he lost himself in sudden thought and he mumbled the rest of his comment. He didn't even seem aware that he had spoken out loud at all.
