It was a lovely night for subterfuge. The sky was as of yet clear, and the darkness was the soft, springtime kind that almost invited you out for a stroll or a daring caper.
In the shadows of the Park, one such caper was just taking place. Lighters or matches--or, in at least one case, fire conjured out of thin air--were touched to candles and lanterns held carefully up so the hot air could buoy them into the air. Small, many-coloured glows blossomed under the trees, and movement rustled back and fro.
Then the first shimmering globe of light went up, striving for the sky. It inched upwards, as if a little hesitant to rise, but past the treetops the night breeze came to its rescue and blew it swirling up, up, up. By then it was joined by others, in ones and twos and threes: lanterns in bright red, in gentle yellow, in half a dozen shades of green. They blazed a riot of colours into the night as they chased each other on the wind.
And on the side or top of each lantern, they carried a name, a memory, a shout-out, a fond or painful or bittersweet remembrance.
You were not forgotten.
