Kagerou finished braiding her hair, straightened her clothes, and reached to fish under the couch for her boots. The lack of a proper porch meant the shoes tended to drift all about the doorstep, and the couch sat right there. It was coming on three in the afternoon, not very late at all, but she'd left the bar in less than exemplary shape last night, too tired for cleanup by the time the last customer had been shooed out the door.

Somewhere in the back of her head, a tiny warning voice was shouting. You can't keep this up forever. Hiring Marbles earlier that week and bending and asking Gai for help had certainly made the weekend bearable, but she couldn't rely especially on her teacher's kindness for very much longer. He already had a full-time job.

For now, she ignored the small voice and tugged on a boot. There, boots, scarf, coat, gloves... She took a last peek in her satchel out of habit, and realised the ring of keys she always kept in the corner pocket was not there. A quick fumble through her pockets turned up nothing. She went back to the bedroom and dug up her clothes from last night; nothing in those pockets, either. Her small dressing table lay in disorder, but the clutter could not hide her keys. She even cautiously went through the top of Rosalind's, in case she'd mistaken her own side of the room in the dark.

Rubbing her temples, she came back to the living room. Such a small thing, and her head was beginning to throb with tension. Calm down, deep breaths, just think... You came in with those keys.

"Axel!" Kagerou raised her voice, then winced at the edge of irritation that slipped into it. She'd been a bit distant with him lately, she thought, but sometimes it felt like he didn't share her sense of responsibility about keeping the bar going. She knew they both grieved in their way. His just did not include carrying on Grift's work. Could she fault him for that? "Axel, have you seen my keys? I'm going to be late!"

With a small noise of frustration, she upturned a pile of sofa cushions on the off-chance that the couch would yield her lost keys.
