She'd left Wolf at home for this round - if it worked, she could always drag him back for his, but she figured it was worth scoping out solo. Anyway, he'd complain and tell her not to go near the pole this time (not her fault, it had been wacky Tree stuff) and generally be disapproving at her for trying again. It wasn't her fault the Griff guy had, um, y'know, and she felt awful about it in the detached way you did, typically, about people you didn't really know but who seemed like they'd deserved better than that, but...nobody could fault her for seeing a window of opportunity and sticking a foot in, right? Maybe she could toast to him with it or something, she decided, and with that, attempted to set aside the moral quandary and enjoy the exciting feeling of getting away with something sneaky. (She managed it, mostly.)
Sooo, where was the barkeep? True, the place was kinda crowded, but how busy could the staff be, right? Marbles hoisted herself onto a barstool, picked up a coaster and spun it on its edge, watching it blur into a globe and then slow and clatter down flat on the countertop again.

"Good evening, what can I get you?" She smiled, doing her best not to let her creeping weariness show. "Something not too strong, maybe? We don't really card visitors here, but you do look a little young, if you don't mind my saying."
Reply
Overall this was so completely different from what Marbles had been expecting that she wasted a long second or two gawping before she remembered that that was a good way to trap flies and quickly shut her mouth.
"Hi!" she chirped. "You work here? Seriously? That's crazy, you're so lucky. I'm Marbles, I just came for my newborn drink..."
She hesitated, thinking over the girl's suggestion. Well, she hadn't told her to push off, so she was already doing better than the last time. And, true, there was something ineffably cool about funny-shaped squat glas ses with golden stuff in them, but she'd never gotten the impression that they tasted very good.
"What about one of those rainbow things?" she suggested, summoning up this idea from somewhere within herself - a fragment of memory? a glimpse of another patron the last time she'd been here? a personal destiny to consume girly drinks? "The kind with all the layers, and fruit, and a paper umbrella on top? That's not too strong, right?"

And she would hold the alcohol, she decided as she looked the girl over. She had never asked Grift if the newborn drink offer extended to virgin drinks, but her best judgment was what went in this place now, and her best judgment said Marbles was probably a little young to be served the full order, as it were.
With that, she turned towards the assortment of fruit juices and liqueur bottles at the back of the bar. "Any preference for the fruit? We have at least apple, orange and cranberry, and I can probably dig up pineapple, too..."

When the girl pointed out the lines and lines of colorful bottles, though, Marbles' mouth dropped open. "Um..." she said, rather torn. "Do I have to pick? Can't you do all of them?"
Reply
"Yes, I suppose even layers are more just for looking nice, but I still want to get them right some day." Apparently she was due a small break; the weekday night was quieting enough that her previous flurry of customers had been just a momentary spot of being busy. So, she could spend a few extra minutes making a fancy drink and chatting to a friendly face. "So, how long have you been here? I've seen your name mentioned on the journals a few times, but..."

"Oh, since about September," she said, cheerfully. "My brother and I got born together. Soo-oo, I guess that makes us siblings twice over!" She shrugged. "Pretty weird, huh?"

She turned then, biting her lip, and trickled a thin layer of apple juice on top of the drink. A wedge of lime and a straw she folded neatly over the rim of the glass completed the picture. She lifted the glass by the stem and presented it to Marbles (if without a flourish, as that might have stirred the layers).
"Here you go!" She went for a smile, succeeded about sixty percent, and then cast another glance around to see if she was needed elsewhere.

She held her breath as the last layer went on, and then let out a delighted laugh as the drink was presented to her. "Whoa, it's so pretty!" she exclaimed. "I kinda don't want to drink it...waaaait," she said, glancing after the girl. "There's no umbrella!"
The words were already out of her mouth when she spotted the weary smile on her face. All right, that was a pasted-on expression if she'd ever seen one. Marbles frowned, dismayed. "Hey...you okay?"
Reply
Oh. She'd let her expression slip, hadn't she? She fumbled for a save of some kind, tried to channel her inner Axel and hope something clever would come to her, and then gave the attempt up as no good.
"I'm all right." She leaned the palms of her hands on the counter and pushed back. "It's just been a busy night--or week, more like." Or a few weeks, but there was a limit to how much she'd tell a customer, even one who wasn't paying right now.

Oh, geez. Suddenly the barkeep girl looked exhausted. Marbles bit her lip, as a weird feeling of deja vu swelled up inside her, trailing ribbons of an intense urge to...
To what? To make things better? She wrinkled her nose at herself. Come on, what was she supposed to do? Search the Scrapyard for paper umbrellas? And why did she feel like that about this girl, anyway? She reminded her of somebody, with that long hair and those big caramel-brown eyes and the...the whole image of a tired young woman leaning on a bar, worn out from trying too hard...
Marbles gulped, suddenly feeling like she'd been staring down the wrong end of a telescope, and refocused on the present. A little embarrassed and hoping she hadn't been making funny faces, she took a sip from her straw, watching the colorful layers warp slightly.
"Wow! It's really good!" she exclaimed, maybe a little too enthusiastically, though it sure wasn't a lie.
Reply
"But thank you. I think I'm getting better with them. I, um, had to throw away some early attempts, because everyone doesn't seem to think it's very fun to make up new combinations. I just thought I'd make them more interesting, but well."

Instead, she carefully plucked the straw out of her drink and licked off a few drops of fruity liquid, then absently balanced it on the tip of one finger, only half paying attention to what she was doing...it was more of a way to keep her hands busy while she talked.
"Yeah?" she said, curious. "What sort of combos did you come up with, anyway? Because this is great." She nodded at her glass, which was looking a little worse for wear but still cheerfully colorful. It was much sweeter than she'd expected - she had a sense of what alcohol usually tasted like, somehow, but maybe fruit liqueurs had less kick?
Reply
"Oh, how did you do that?" She canted her head. "I mean--the thing with the straw, that was pretty deft. I couldn't do that." She laughed, a little sheepish now.
"And ah, you probably don't want to know," she muttered. "The thing with the avocado and the lemon and the peach was... um. Let's just forget I mentioned that."
Reply
She picked it up and balanced it again, tossed it in the air and caught it properly this time, and, pleased with herself, grinned sunnily at Kage...rou? "See? Anyway, I dunno what an avocado is, but peach and lemon sounds pretty good. You don't have a spoon or anything, do you?"
Reply
"That's a really neat thing to be able to do, then. Can you balance other things? I had to train for weeks before I was comfortable with the drinks trays!"
