Flame sometimes wondered if she'd ever get tired of just walking around the Sphere, studying the people and shops with the same cheerful curiosity that she faced most things these days. It had been a few months already but she still managed to find something new or interesting every time she went out.

She turned the corner and saw someone ahead of her, in the familiar clothing of a newborn, someone with long white hair who was walking fast. There had been a few people born recently, but she wasn't sure who this was - perhaps she hadn't spoken to them yet.

She broke into a small jog in an attempt to catch up to the newcomer. Journals were nice enough, but it was always better to make acquaintance in person, in her opinion.

As Flame approached, Rauxes listened closer to the sound of the laughter. She - and her supposed stalker - had been traveling in one direction, but Flame walked from a different direction towards Flame. Rauxes then thought of how perhaps magic could be involved to misdirect her, but upon looking at Flame more closely... Rauxes wondered if she knew this woman - not from Edensphere, but from her lost memories. Tall, blond, a pleasant expression, active enough to choose to jog than walk towards her. Thus, Rauxes didn't see Flame a threat, but a look flashed in her eyes like she'd considered it.

"Greetings, stranger. I don't suppose you saw anyone lurking about on your way here, did you?"

Flame blinked. Had she interrupted this woman's search for someone? She hadn't noticed anyone out and about, but she glanced around anyway out of habit.

"I haven't seen anyone, no. Are you looking for someone? I'm Flame, by the way." She smiled. "You don't have to call me stranger. Mostly we're friends here."

Rauxes practically snorted in derision. "All friends here, you say? I beg to differ. Mere days after awakening here, I've offended plenty and made the rest think me an idiot."

She slowed to a halt and regarded Flame again, realizing this woman clearly didn't know what had happened. "I'm not seeking someone specific, but someone all the same, Miss Flame. Can't you hear the laughter?"

Flame took a step back in actual surprise. Clearly this woman was upset about something. She wondered what she'd done to offend - or perhaps it was just her gruff manner. Well, Flame was used to gruff people; many of them were nice underneath in her experience.

"I don't think you're an idiot," she said carefully, "but I don't hear any laughing. Perhaps the person ducked into a house somewhere?"

"I can hear it and you can't? That's odd indeed..." Rauxes's gaze wandered off into the distance for a moment before she regarded Flame again. "Perhaps you didn't see what I wrote then..."

She looked Flame over, trying to get a feel for if she was lying or telling the truth. Deciding she wasn't, Rauxes relaxed a little. "In any event, you've told me your name. I suppose I should return the courtesy." She extended a hand. "I'm Rauxes."

"I don't always remember to check the journals when I'm busy. Otherwise I would have greeted you when you arrived. It's nice to meet you, Rauxes. I hope you can find your laugher soon. I think that would get tiresome."

She frowned momentarily.

Rauxes stared back at Flame, puzzled and blinking. They'd only just met, so Rauxes couldn't fathom what Flame was reacting to - whether she'd said something to offend Flame, or Flame thought she'd offended Rauxes.

"Why are you frowning?"

"Because that's really rude, to follow someone around and laugh at them! Even if you've done something foolish." She seemed to be quite passionate about this.

Rauxes stared more, her mouth gaping a little now. Rude? And she's... upset about this?

She shook her head a little. "I'm certain there was malicious intent, so I'm hardly surprised the person has chosen not to reveal their true nature to me. Rogues and thieves and other such shadowy sorts are rarely so direct, aren't they? It's not their style."

It seemed perfectly reasonable for Flame to be upset. An insult was an insult.

"That's true. But I've never heard of an invisible one. I don't think." The idea didn't provoke any idea of familiarity. "Or that only you could hear."

Invisibility was very plausible in Rauxes's mind. "Magic can do more than make a person invisible, of that much I'm certain. False sounds aren't so strange a thought either. Misdirection is a... key element, I think, to magic."

She couldn't put her finger on it, but there seemed to be different types of magic - or rather, different purposes. Focusing on one or another could make that brand of magic stronger, much like practicing anything else for long periods of times.

"An illusion, perhaps," Flame agreed. That at least sounded possible to her. "I don't think I know much about it. I'm just a smith. I hope you can sort it out, though."

"A smith? Meaning you work with weapons and armor and the like?"

That sounded familiar, but in the way that obviously every village should have someone with such skills. It didn't strike her as someone she'd need to visit often, though.

"An important skill for any locality. Do you see much business in this place?" The unasked question was: How prevalent is war and general criminal activity here?

"That's right." And she considered the question. "Well, there's enough. We have a weapons shop, and I do a lot of repairs too. It's a good living." She smiled; the unasked question went unanswered.

"I'll have to stop by sometime, if only for curiosity." Unlike many people who arrived in Edensphere, Rauxes didn't have a strong calling for possessing a weapon at all times, let alone a specific kind of weapon. The same went for armor. It simply didn't occur to her. "I'm trying to learn as much about this place as I can, for now. It seems to be easier than learning about myself, in any event."
