She turned the corner and saw someone ahead of her, in the familiar clothing of a newborn, someone with long white hair who was walking fast. There had been a few people born recently, but she wasn't sure who this was - perhaps she hadn't spoken to them yet.
She broke into a small jog in an attempt to catch up to the newcomer. Journals were nice enough, but it was always better to make acquaintance in person, in her opinion.

"Greetings, stranger. I don't suppose you saw anyone lurking about on your way here, did you?"
Reply
"I haven't seen anyone, no. Are you looking for someone? I'm Flame, by the way." She smiled. "You don't have to call me stranger. Mostly we're friends here."

She slowed to a halt and regarded Flame again, realizing this woman clearly didn't know what had happened. "I'm not seeking someone specific, but someone all the same, Miss Flame. Can't you hear the laughter?"
Reply
"I don't think you're an idiot," she said carefully, "but I don't hear any laughing. Perhaps the person ducked into a house somewhere?"

She looked Flame over, trying to get a feel for if she was lying or telling the truth. Deciding she wasn't, Rauxes relaxed a little. "In any event, you've told me your name. I suppose I should return the courtesy." She extended a hand. "I'm Rauxes."

She frowned momentarily.

"Why are you frowning?"

She shook her head a little. "I'm certain there was malicious intent, so I'm hardly surprised the person has chosen not to reveal their true nature to me. Rogues and thieves and other such shadowy sorts are rarely so direct, aren't they? It's not their style."
Reply
"That's true. But I've never heard of an invisible one. I don't think." The idea didn't provoke any idea of familiarity. "Or that only you could hear."

She couldn't put her finger on it, but there seemed to be different types of magic - or rather, different purposes. Focusing on one or another could make that brand of magic stronger, much like practicing anything else for long periods of times.

That sounded familiar, but in the way that obviously every village should have someone with such skills. It didn't strike her as someone she'd need to visit often, though.
"An important skill for any locality. Do you see much business in this place?" The unasked question was: How prevalent is war and general criminal activity here?
