Hawk didn't consider himself as having many friends in this place. Acquaintances, fellows and allies, yes, but those were ties of utility and mutual benefit.

So, when one of the few people he might have filed under the word friend reappeared after several days, obviously out of sorts and apparently somewhat worse for wear, he did what he could. He collected the lazing dragon--by now irrevocably termed Fuu, for the wind, in his mind--and limped out of the door with the small creature draped around his shoulders ( ... )

"Hello, Hawk-j - "

Even as Huo opened the door, even as he bowed in greeting to his friend, he knew that this was going to be... difficult.

If he was seeing things, then he was seeing them very vividly, indeed. The little dragon was as solid and real as anything he'd ever laid eyes on, no, more so, because the shock of its presence nearly made it glow, realer than anything around it. Krile and her transformation had been bad enough; although she had been blessed with it, that form had not been her true one. Sitting down took some doing, with his left leg tightly splinted, but his took the indicated place gratefully, setting the cane within reach and opening his bag.

The dragon, so far content on his perch, slipped to the floor. His bright eyes swept around the room, the tight, blue-edged scaling on his head gleaming with the movement. "New place. Explore? See?" The words undulated and warbled, a soft stream of sound ( ... )

It was true: the tension that had filled the room, the intense awkwardness, was all but palatable. Huo could do nothing at that moment but stare after his friend, following man and dragon with his gaze until Hawk had settled down, and a long moment after that before he, too, returned inside and settled into his own chair. The way Hawk spoke, the way the dragon responded - the thing was more reminiscent of a mischievous child than anything else ( ... )

"You'll regret that yet when he decides to nap on your papers." Hawk shooed the dragon away from his feet, and the little creature floated up into the air in mid-step, looping nimbly in the space of the room ( ... )
