Huo had his cloth bag slung over one shoulder, and a larger bag in hand. His step was light and smile ready. He had had his hopes, after their first trip, that Hawk could be lured along on further adventures, and was happy to see that hope bear fruit. And this adventure, well... he couldn't say exactly what possessed him to consider the idea of trying to ride a flying beast-horse, and he suspected that he mostly wanted to do it to show that he could, if that happened to be his fancy. Which was not a very rational motivation, but it drove him nonetheless ( ... )

Not much luring would be necessary, as a rule; while Hawk was not as inquisitive by nature as Huo himself appeared, the Sphere was growing a tad small to sate his wanderlust. He liked the open country and the empty road, for reasons he couldn't quite verbalise. An opportunity like this was not to be overlooked, and the company was welcome ( ... )

"I'm not sure that I fancy myself a rider at all," Huo answered with a slight shrug, speaking honestly. He followed Hawk into the elevator, taking a moment, as had become his habit, to run his fingers along the buttons and wonder about this largest and most mysterious of the Sphere's machines. "But the build of the animal wouldn't suit a saddle, even discounting the wings. Too narrow, too bony. We will not have a very comfortable ride." His smile showed how little difference that made ( ... )

The robes had alarmed him the first time, but now he knew he could expect to keep his spear and his bag, and the rest mattered less. The red and gold were somewhat gaudy, and he hadn't stopped to ponder their significance, though he now quirked a brow upon catching Huo's sideways look.

"I'm still looking for a flashlight, so if we're headed into the forest, I'd better light the lantern, seeing as we don't have Stellaris with us with her bag of wonders." Hawk paused to tend to the task. The strange, sprawling castle appeared amply lit against the fading daylight, but the beckoning forest already lay deep in the shadows of the evening.

"Let's hope that purpose isn't to chew on visitors too presumptuous for their own good," he said, sliding the glass panel back into place on the lit lantern. "I'd rather save my spearwork for the training sands."

"You have been looking for one, as well?" Huo chuckled softly. He and Hawk had been equally astonished at Stellaris' devices - another stroke of similarity between them that made the other man into such an agreeable companion - and it was to be expected that they both spend some time and effort trying to win some wonders of their own. "It seems the old-fashioned way must serve for us. If we succeed, we could invite her along next time." She seemed like a woman who would enjoy flight ( ... )
