It was dark, but the stars and moon provided enough light to see his surroundings by - thick branches high off the ground. Wood and leaves flew past, he was running, and the wind was cool on Youth’s face. Accurately he went from branch to branch, quickly enough that the limbs hardly had time to bend before he was on to the next. This continued for a while. Whether it was one hour or two he wasn’t sure, but it didn’t matter. He was approaching his target ( ... )

Of course, such a thing as a peaceful day rarely happened here. There was a flare of stunning, blinding light between the trees, followed by a commotion as people nearby halted or shouted in confusion. She heard someone shouting--was that Smoke? Kagerou broke into a run, numerous familiar presences floating into her senses as she dashed across the grass ( ... )

Someone was approaching him in the midst of everything, and Youth blindly turned his head in their direction. Kagerou's voice was a huge relief - it was a trusted student who was right near him, not someone he wasn't sure of.
"I cannot see. I do not know if I am all right." Not I am blind. Not yet. His vision would come back any moment. He was just blinded right now because of the flash. "There was a flash. I think Cloud dropped... an apple... into the fire." Too many people here. Youth wasn't about to say crystal, not when they were all dealing with the aftereffects ( ... )

"Yes, you're glowing, and so are several others." She raised her voice a little, perhaps needlessly. "I should--well, the glowing is probably from the apple, maybe, if it doesn't hurt you. But I can try and heal you once we get--"
She braced herself to pull him up, clasped his hand in hers--and the memory rushed into her senses, overwhelming her for a moment. Reflexively, her fingers tightened on his hand, and she made periodic, small noises of surprise or alarm. When the memory finally ended, she blinked at Youth, unable to summon a coherent word for a second.
"I just..." Her voice wavered. She swallowed and began again, softly. "I... think I just saw a memory. Your memory. What on earth is going on?"

"I... I'm not sure." Think, Kagerou, think! "So that was you, in the trees, in the dark... I'm sorry. It was just so vivid, and I wasn't expecting..."
First things first. She was a medic and she had a patient, that hadn't changed. "I'm fine. It triggered when you touched my hand, so maybe it was the contact. And you said the apple fell in a fire, right?" Her voice remained low. "I, um, think most of the others have someone to look after them, so I'll just help you to a bench, okay?"

"All right," she said, "It should be just even ground, not too far." She could see a bench in the lee of a low-branched oak, a little sheltered from sight. She didn't speak, other than for brief snippets of guidance, until they reached their destination.
"Well, here we are." She sat down next to him, careful to stay close. "Can I try to... heal that?" She used the verb frequently, but somehow it didn't seem to quite fit to describe what happened when she enclosed someone in the golden shield. "It might not work, but I can give it a try.
"And... don't apologise. I don't think I wanted to see that, but I've seen worse. I don't mean to... strut or anything, but I have. And sometimes we have reasons."

Youth kept the silence, not sure how to break it. The risk of more conversation pushing her away was more than enough reason to stay quiet at the moment. When she announced that they were there he reached down, feeling the bench and taking a seat. "I would appreciate it, a great deal. It is... disconcerting to not be able to see." He hated being weak.
But her statement relieved Youth quite a bit. His eyes closed, even if it didn't really matter at the moment, and his voice was soft. "Thank you." There was definitely no guarentee that others would accept his past like that, but even just having one friend respond like that lifted a burden.
