"Oh yes," Grift replied. "No gun's quite like this one, as far as I know. Memories or not, I'd remember shooting something like this."

The question didn't take him by surprise, but it was one that he didn't intend to answer. He assumed a contemplative expression for a moment and unwittingly, his few memories rushed through his mind. The sound of grinding flesh, his own voice saying I shall shoot you in the forehead, the burns upon his wrists, the ease in which he carried himself through illicit activities.

As much as he wished to believe it, he was no charming devil coasting through life committing petty crimes. He was involved in something bigger, God only knew what. He had no doubt that he used an AK-47 for violent purposes; why else would he assess each gun for how effective they'd be in battle otherwise?

Expression unchanging, he shrugged. "Who can say for sure? I've never used a gun here against anything but a giant ant. Besides that, I seriously doubt I'd ever get into anything that I'd need to use so much firepower for." He patted the gun. "These guns are strictly for enjoyment. I'm not sorry to say that I'm not much of a fighting man."

It wasn't lying, he thought, not really. It was just not telling the truth.

Gene shrugged and let the topic about the context in which the gun was used drop. If Grift didn't remember, he didn't remember (and even if he did, there was little point in prodding; Gene certainly wasn't open with what little he knew of his own militaristic engagements). Rather, he decided to focus on a part of the conversation closer to the present.

"You stuck around when the giant ants were about? Christ, that had to be a scare. Though, that's hardly the only giant thing around." Gene had seen that himself with the bullfrog... thing in Crystala. It was a big part of the reason he kept that sort of fire power around. You never knew what you might run into.

"Only when the first were coming," he said. "I wouldn't stay here voluntarily." Grift exhaled, and pushed another magazine that he had brought with him into the gun.

"At least most giant things around here don't actively rampage." He grimaced, patting one hand to his chest. "Disneyworld was all well and good, but we lost a lot of old spirits over at the bar."

He glanced over at the target, then back at Gene. "I'm ready for another go, but first I think that the master should give me a little demonstration. If you're the teacher, you'd best be better than me, Gene."

"Hah, you're smarter than some, then." Nooo, that wasn't a dig at his currently missing brother who went back into the ant infested tree, what would make you think that?

"True enough, though I'm just waiting for the day when a crazed squirrel or a pissy bluejay decides to run amuck. Seems like the kind of thing this place would spring without warning."

The challenge for Gene to show Grift how it was done was met with a laugh as he reached out to accept the gun. "If you're looking for any sort of 'master' touches, ask me again when I've got the Browning in hand."

Gene resettled his earmuffs, then situated the butt stock against his shoulder and squeezed his left eye shut as he looked through the site. He squeezed the trigger, waited a moment to get over the kick back and readjust his line of site, then pulled the trigger again. Lather, rinse, repeat. He wasn't able to get every shot as close as he'd like, but he liked to think he did well enough, considering how the gun was kicking about. He was particularly pleased with the headshot he managed.

"So, did the teacher make the grade?" He asked as he carefully handed the gun back to Grift.

Grift smirked at the mention of squirrels and bluejays, surprising himself with the mental images that followed. "As long as they don't have more than four legs," he said. "I've had quite enough of insects."

After Gene shot, he took the gun from him and waggled one hand dismissively in the air. "You get an A-minus. You'll need a few more headshots to get one hundred percent." In truth, he was rather impressed; he found few during his time here that were better shots than him and both Gene and his brother were very, very good. That sort of thing made you wonder.

"In all honesty, you're a dab hand with guns, aren't you? Did you learn here, or was it that, oh, innate-discovered talent stuff you get around here?"

"Ha, I imagine we've all had our fill of that." Some more than others, since he had heard that more than one person around here had fallen to giant bugs.

"I suppose I'll have to work hard to get my percentage up, hm?" He blinked as something about that struck him as... familiar. He recalled being in the cockpit of the Gundam in his memory, and feeling his face make the motions of disappointment during the simulation. Maybe it was related.

When Grift asked him where his proficiency with guns came from, Gene shrugged nonchalantly. "Oh, I'm sure I had some background in it back where I come from. I can't be sure of the extent." Which was technically not a lie; there was likely more to it all than he knew. "Might have even grown up around it, since it seems to be a shared family interest."
