She was carrying a pot of tea when it happened.

This was Kurayami's first regret, her first reaction. She was carrying a pot of tea, hurrying between customers on a busy Monday, her first busy Monday at work. She had just watched an elegant and soft-spoken lady in colorful skirts glide out the door with her purchase of tea, and someone was raising two fingers to ask politely for a refill ( ... )

Lea did not run. He was sure there were things in life that were worth running from, but he was pretty sure this was not one of them. Anger Management Boy was busy freaking out in the square, and while he knew he was a somewhat obvious target, standing tall as he did and with his violently red hair, he was pretty sure the gunman wasn't really looking where he was shooting. AS he sidled past a particular shopfront, he was nearly bowled over when a small crowd of people burst through the doorway and fanned out into the streets, scattering like startled animals. Stopping dead in his tracks to avoid the obstacle, Lea lifted his arms and tried to squeeze through the oncoming current of human bodies, then jumped, flinching when there was another pepper of gunfire in the air.

O~kay, time to make tracks.

Grabbing the open doorway and physically pulling himself through the crowd, Lea staggered out of the crowd and stumbled away from the teashop, pausing in the middle of the street to boggle at the people behind him. What the hell were ( ... )

If she gritted her teeth hard enough, the pain pounding on every angle of her wing and shoulder and arm and back and neck and on and on would go away. If she shut her eyes tight enough, when she opened them again, her vision would be clear. Fixing this in her mind, Kurayami clutched every muscle up tight and forced her eyes open, lifting her head.

Something was wrong with her wing. This thought was front and center, but another realization pushed it somewhat askew; somebody was crouched next to her, saying things. Insistent things.

Turning her head, Kurayami took a deep breath and focused. The pain was -- still blinding, but manageable, now. As she got a blurry first look at him, she realized with fresh horror that the man kneeling at her side had blood all over him...before her vision cleared somewhat and she saw that it was just a lot of very red, very unkempt hair. There was something familiar about that hair, though she was sure she hadn't seen him before, and he looked downright concerned. Flailing for the memory, she ( ... )

She met his eyes, hers bright with pain, and they sort of focused then, and she actually looked at him this time. When she said his name, he couldn't help a pleased half-grin.

"Oh, so you did memorize it," he chortled, and then the smile faded at her next statement. "Ah...oh." So the wings were grey. The red was the blood from-- "Oh, jeez," Lea breathed, leaning over to look and then sort of wishing he hadn't. "That...doesn't look so good," he said to her, and then cast a glance over his shoulder at the scene still going on in the street behind them.

He rose then, his eyes still on the street, and then he glanced back at Kurayami.

"Can you walk?" he asked, though logically he supposed she could. She just couldn't...fly. Could she fly with those little wings anyway? Well, this wasn't the time to ask, either way. "I'm not about to go play hero in the fray," he admitted, waving a hand to summon a portal, "but I'll get you out of here and to Wellspring, if you wanna come with." The portal whirled and whispered into existence ( ... )

Oh, Kurayami thought. So he smiled the way he wrote--like a wry little flame that spread, whether you wanted to be warmed up or not. Her pulse was thumping in her temples, but she managed to turn up the corners of her mouth in response.

Then she saw the look on his face, when he craned over to peer at her wing, and felt sick all over again. Ruined, something pronounced in the pit of her stomach, and she ignored it fiercely. He was offering a hand, and a chance, and a way out, and she knew she couldn't help anyone like this, even if she felt like trying anymore.

"Yeah, that'd be...good," she said, tersely. Struggling half to her feet, she caught his hand, awkwardly off-balance, and let him pull her the rest of the way up. (Something nasty told her not to let go of her wing with the other hand, as if it might just fall a--no. Her mind shied away from the rest of that thought and she let it go ( ... )
