Characters: Aim (imthefavorite) and Gene-1 (live_ringer)
Date/Time: March 25th, 2010
Location: Aim's place
Rating: PG?
Summary: Gene's been putting off talking with Aim for a good while and recent events have nudged him to change that. Aim's had a dream that he wouldn't mind discussing, either.

It had been a bit of an unexpected shock, hearing over the journals that Derrick had lost his daughter, before he got to reconnect with, or even recognize her. It was always hard in the Sphere when people lost those close to them, but there was something particularly jarring about losing family you knew were blood-related. Gene felt for the guy, and realized in part that it was because he could relate. Though they could hardly be called close, Gene had lost a blood relative to the caprice of the Sphere's disappearing acts. (And if he took a bit of time on introspection, that feeling of loss wasn't foreign. It was present in his first and second dreams. Though Gene always shied away from analyzing those things closely enough to fully admit it.)

But some would call Gene lucky. What little blood family he could be sure he had was brought back to the Tree. It was a second chance. ...And one that he had squandered in every possible way. When Aim first arrived, Gene had met with him as requested and talked with him, with the promise that they would speak again and cover more ground regarding dreams and possible memories. Still, things had felt incredibly awkward (things always felt inherently awkward when it came to his brother). In the face of not wanting to deal with that as well as being angry at how the Sphere jerked him and everyone else around, Gene had put the talk off. For a grande total of two months.

Gene wasn't the sort to feel guilty, but even he could admit there was a pattern to things. Sniper had disappeared. Range had disappeared. The man in his dream whom he could now be certain was his brother had disappeared. If he kept maintaining this instinctual need for distance through sheer avoidance, how long before Aim disappeared and yet another chance was lost? It'd taken a wake up call in the form of the disappearance of a girl he didn't even know to drive this through Gene's thick skull.

Still, that didn't mean he exactly found this easy. It had taken a day or two to psych himself up to drop by Aim's place. Even then, he didn't bother to let Aim know over the journals that he was coming. If he showed up, knocked, and Aim wasn't there, well... couldn't be helped, right? Which is how Gene wound up on Aim's doorstep out of the blue one afternoon.

One knock. Two. And Gene found himself wondering whether this was really as good an idea as he had initially thought as he waited...
