With a cheerful ding, the elevator doors opened into a cramped room that was not much bigger than the elevator itself. Although the room was lined with dark wood panels, soft beige carpet and several tasteful light fixtures, its design seemed marred by a dozen computer severs, monitors and cables that spanned the entire side of one neatly paneled wall. It's opposite side where the observers stood held numberous sterile medical instruments--needles, cotton swabs and thin tumblers--and there were at least three doors, two closed and one open. It was as though the room had started off as a living space and quickly morphed into a strange mixture of computer center and doctor's office.

At the center of the room, where everyone's gaze focused naturally, there was a reclining chair built into what looked like a small metal arch that held more buttons and blinking lights. As the observers watched, a mirror image of Genius crossed the room and began to intently push buttons on the chair. He was closely followed by a beautiful young woman. Like the oddly designed room, the pair seemed out of sync with each other. He was dressed in street clothes--jeans, purple plaid shirt and sneakers--and had a calm but distracted look on his face. The girl exuded vibrant energy and happiness but was barefoot and dressed in a simple camisole and loose drawstring pants. She was also drop dead gorgeous--and Genius was totally ignoring her.

"If I'm wrong, I'll know," the young woman said in an excited voice. She paced the small room eagerly, and Genius had to sidestep around her to play with another set of computers. "The man can't lie to save his life," she continued earnestly, "If he gives me that look, I'll walk away."

The woman moved toward the chair at the center of the room and slid onto it. She held a thin gold chain with a tasteful heart shaped pendant in her hands and as she talked she absentmindedly let it trail between her fingers.

"But I don't know, I think he feels it too!" The chair began to recline, which forced the woman to settle herself a bit. It lowered until her head was exactly aligned with the metal arch. "And I think... I've found something real." The last word was said with a reverent hush.

She was in love.

"I'm glad," Genius said, without even the slightest trace of sincerity. His eyes were still focused on a set of monitors that displayed numerous squiggly lines and shifting blue, green and red colors. The lines went up and down excitedly, the colors swirled. After a few adjustments, Genius finally turned to look at the woman.

"This is going to pinch a bit," he warned. Then he pushed a button.

The metal arch lit up with a bright blue light around the woman's head and she gasped--then began to flinch somewhat violently. This was more than a pinch! Her hands twitched on the glowing hand rests of the chair as she seemed to react to something none of them could see and the gold chain that she'd been holding slid onto the floor.

Then it was over. The machine dinged like a baking oven, the lights went off and the chair pushed her back into a sitting position. But it was like a switch had gone off in the woman's head. Gone was the vibrant, in love personality from before. Instead she wore an empty expression.

Now Genius finally looked the slightest bit intrigued. He put his hands behind his back and leaned forward and spoke in a very calm, neutral voice. "Hello E~~. How are you feeling?"

She tilted to look at him. "Did I fall asleep?"

Genius smiled in smug satisfaction. "For a little while."

She blinked. "Shall I go now?"

"If you like."

Like a robot, the woman rose up from the chair. Her previous excited gait was gone--instead she walked calmly over the fallen necklace and wandered out the open doorway, out of sight. Genius waited for a moment before sighing and springing into action. He walked past monitors that now held dull, almost flat line graphics and limited muted colors and began to fiddle with the chair, his actions very practiced. After a moment of typing he pushed a button and ejected a square hard drive. It was still hot and he winced before blowing on it. Then he walked towards a pair of closed bay doors and opened them to reveal a much larger and more comfortable room.

It had the look of a narrow rec room or a loft with a couch, pillows, fridge, multiple chess sets and toys scattered everywhere. A wack-a-mole machine sat up against the wall next to a coffee marker. On left side there was a metal balcony rail and carpeted stairway on the far left led down into an observation deck where giant glass windows surrounded the entire room almost like a fishbowl. It looked down into an large beautiful open floor space where several people in tee-shirts and drawstring pants walked around a square pond and several comfortable chairs. The space outside the room had the look of a meditation center or a spa, artfully designed and tastefully decorated.

A tall, dark skinned gentleman dressed in a suit was waiting for Genius.

"Everything go alright with the wipe?"

Genius headed towards a desk where yet another computer stood waiting for him. He shoved the hard drive into a computer slot before looking up and frowning at the older man.

"Why don't you just ask E~~?" He paused and then broke into a smarmy smile. "Oh that's right. Because she can't remember. Ah ha ha." The laughter was fake, the tone arrogant and condescending. "'Course it went alright," Genius sniffed as he leaned back over the computer and typed several commands. The monitor lit up with commands in a string of technical jiberesh. "Ah---imprint's gone. The new moon has made her virgin again."

He stood up. " Is there some reason it shouldn't have? Something happen during the engagement?"

The man in the suit paused. "I think she finally met the right guy." There was the slightest note of disapproval in his voice.

"Oh ha ha. You're so jaded," Genius shot back. "That's such a ....middle aged...." He trailed off as the suit gave him an inscrutable look. "....She had fun right?"

"She thought so."

Genius ejected the hard drive and turned to place it in another machine. "There's nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so, man-friend," he said as he worked. "We gave two people the perfect weekend together." He turned to look at the other man and pointed to himself. "We're great humanitarians."

The older man turned to stare at the floor below. "Who'd spend their lives in jail in anyone found this place."

Genius joined him. "We're all so misunderstood. Which great humanitarians often are." He pointed. Down on the floor, the woman from before was wandering aimlessly with her blank expression. "Look at E~~. Not a care in the world. She's living the dream."

"Who's dream?"

Genius shrugged. "Who's next?"

The words hung in the air for a moment before the scene froze and then slowly faded away.
